Speculators eye Cornyn for Supreme Court post
Texas senator fits the profile but says he is not actively looking

WASHINGTON - Sen. John Cornyn of Texas is flattered to be mentioned as a possible candidate for the U.S. Supreme Court and would consider the job if it were offered. But the freshman lawmaker is hardly seeking a new engagement.

Mum's the word
The White House has kept quiet on its choices for the Supreme Court, which could have a vacancy if ailing Chief Justice William Rehnquist steps down or another of its aging jurists retires. But the silence hasn't stopped legal analysts from speculating on whom President Bush might nominate to the high court.

The short list often includes Michael McConnell, a judge on the Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals; J. Michael Luttig, a Texan on the Richmond, Va.-based 4th Circuit; John Roberts Jr. of the District of Columbia circuit; and U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, another former Texas justice.

Among those thought to be in a second tier of possible candidates are Republican Cornyn; Larry Thompson, who served as deputy to former Attorney General John Ashcroft; Ted Olson, the former U.S. solicitor general; Emilio Miller Garza and Edith Jones, judges on the New Orleans-based 5th Circuit; Samuel Alito Jr., a judge on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit; and U.S. District Judge Ricardo Hinojosa of Texas.

1. I would like it if John Cornyn is named U.S. Ambassador to
Pluto.

Effective this afternoon at the latest.

2. So if some Christian Jihadi™
shot him in an "understandable" rage about judicial activism, would this count as irony?

3. Verbatim quote from my partner the lawyer
who was originally licensed in Texas, when I read her this headline:

"No! Cornyn's not smart enough to be on the Supreme Court!"

Oh well, Bush isn't smart enough to be president either, but there we are...

5. Cornyn's not smart enough
to come in out of the rain, let alone sit on the Supreme Court.

But, of course, we can count on the shrub to find the worst possible nominee for any position.

and KBH gets the gubernational nomination -that way KKKarl doesn't have to worry about his party disintegrating in Texas.

The nation and the state of Texas on the other hand will not be so fortunate:scared:

7. I bet Orin Hatch is pissed
He's been selling his soul to the neocons for over a decade in order to get a crack at the SCOTUS...to have Cornyn leapfrog him has goota feel like the shattering of a dream.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy...oh...well it could also happen to Cornyn...and Delay...and Frist...and....

8. I would shoot myself if that fuckin' idiot makes the Sup. Court!
That would be THE end of justice in America. I hate that man almost more than my senior senator - Bitch McConnell!

Ain't he the one that said something like letting gay people get married is like letting box turtles get married? John Stewart had a lot of fun with that...
