GOP Chairman Walks Out of Meeting (Patriot Act)
WASHINGTON - The Republican chairman walked off with the gavel, leaving Democrats shouting into turned-off microphones at a raucous hearing Friday on the Patriot Act.

<snip>

Democrats asked for the hearing, the 11th the committee has held on the act since April, saying past hearings had been too slanted toward witnesses who supported the law. The four witnesses were from groups, including Amnesty International USA and the American Immigration Lawyers Association, that have questioned the constitutionality of some aspects of the act, which allows law enforcement greater authority to investigate suspected terrorists.

Nadler said Sensenbrenner, one of the authors of the Patriot Act, was "rather rude, cutting everybody off in mid-sentence with an attitude of total hostility."

Tempers flared when Rep. Mike Pence (news, bio, voting record), R-Ind., accused Amnesty International of endangering the lives of Americans in uniform by referring to the prison at Guantanamo Bay as a "gulag." Sensenbrenner didn't allow the Amnesty representative, Chip Pitts, to respond until Nadler raised a "point of decency."

Not yet ... in fact CNN reported on the hearing briefly with a short
clip of witness testimony and made absolutely NO mention of how that hearing ended ignoring the REAL story of the day! This was over an hour after the hearing ended.

...........
great---(not so)---look at what a responder from Finland said!! Europe is listening also to our disgraceful tactics of the 'tyannny of the majority"!!!--and we can not even get our media/press to report on it!!

closed a meeting called for under House Rule 11 by the minority party; refused to admit a point of order that would have led to adjournment; was rude to witnesses called to testify under oath.

Well, the Senate Dems say that unless all documents are released, there will be no vote on Bolton. They should also state that unless the House follows its own rules on Patriot Act hearings, there will be no Senate vote on said act.

it will be interesting to find out which media sources pick it up.

Randi just talked to Sheila Jackson Lee on air. Apparently Sensenbrenner violated House rules during the proceedings.

Gees! These crises are coming fast and furious. The Repugs will literally stop at nothing to prevent the truth from coming out. I don't know if these are acts of desperation or only outrageous abuse of power. I would hope that desperation is part of it, however I fear that it is just the latter.

This is a very scary event. The checks and balances in the Constitution are being broken down, one by one by one.

21. I watched it on my computer--C-Span
I wonder why this is such a divided issue. It seems as if the republicans on the committee want to be right and refuse to even look at potential abuse. They close their eyes and cover their ears and yell to avoid hearing anything that may be against the current administration.

These people who attempted to testify were intelligent, thoughtful, insightful people. I was astounded at the lack of respect and closed-minded-ness of the republicans.

I feel the same way. Supposedly we "gave our word" we would defend those people and we left them to their own fate when the chips were down. As it turns out the Vietnamese People are no worse for the wear but I am. I used to believe in my country and now I don't. Republicans have proved beyond all doubt that they are LIARS and when in the Leadership of our nation they prove it to the world. I feel all fifty eight thousand GIs died in vain and many were friends of mine. I will never forgive the Republicans for it.

Law-makers! And, I'm so sick and tired of hearing what the "majority Repuks" do "for we the people," BECAUSE:

1. They won by a (?) what... 1.1 percent margin; hardly a majority.
2. They're disgusting leader's POLLS are WORSE then Nixon's during Watergate.rs
3. They do NOT represent MORE voters, rather less. Just ask the (D) NY Senator... Democrat Senators represent MORE VOTERS then Repuks!

Sorry but when witnesses like "librarians" are treated so arrogantly, beyond rude, and Repuk, yes Repuk Congressional seat holders "walk out" and turn off mikes refusing to hear witnesses, "and" don't even allow our Democrat Congressional members to even hold Judaical conferences in the White House, which "we the people" actually own, when the "HELL" is all of this going to STOP!?!

I ask the FReeper Creepers out here this: Is this what you want? Is it? To "deprive" and "break laws" just to have your way, all the while overriding your Democrat "grandmothers," "aunts," "sisters," "brothers," and maybe even your "nieces," "nephews," and "children?" Certainly Republican voters don't hold the reign on all of the family and friends...

34. Pelosi: Republicans Once Again Abuse Power, Attempt to Silence Democrats
.. in Hearing on the Patriot Act

Date : Friday - June 10, 2005

To: National Desk

Contact: Brendan Daly or Jennifer Crider, 202-226-7616, both of the Office of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON, June 10 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on Republicans' shameful attempt today to silence Democrats at hearing this morning on the impact of the Patriot Act, when Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin inappropriately adjourned the hearing.

"The Republicans' abuse of power reached a new low this morning when they tried to silence Democrats at a hearing on the Patriot Act by cutting the microphones.

"Chairman Sensenbrenner proved again today that he is afraid of ideas, and that Republicans will stop at nothing to silence Democrats. It is quite ironic that at a hearing on the impact of the Patriot Act on civil liberties, the Republicans attempted to suppress free speech.

"This is part of Republican abuses of power: to silence Democrats and the voice of the minority, to deny millions of Americans a voice in Congress. Republican leaders dictate the party line and ram bills through committees, and permit few if any amendments on the floor. Republicans are unwilling and unable to compete in the marketplace of ideas, so they have chosen to arbitrarily and capriciously abuse their power simply because they can.

"Democrats will not be silenced when we uphold our oath of office to protect and defend our Constitution and civil liberties as we protect and defend the American people. I commend Judiciary Committee Democrats for continuing to question witnesses after the Republicans' shameful behavior, and for standing up for the institution of the House.

"This incident is the latest in a series of disgraceful conduct by Mr. Sensenbrenner. Last month, he misused an official committee report to mischaracterize in a derogatory manner amendments offered by three Democratic Members. As a result, the House was required to authorize the filing of a supplemental report, which contained significant changes, to correct the record.

"As House Democratic Leader, I expect all Members to be treated by the majority with dignity and respect. I will ask Speaker Hastert to order Mr. Sensenbrenner to apologize for his behavior to the witnesses at the hearing today, and to promise that this will never again happen."

41. What this is, is a particularly brazen breach of the unspoken "Let's
pretend this is still a democracy" rule in Congress. Sensenbrenner believes that his party holds all the power and he was only indulging the Dems' silly requests for the hearing. But he got tired of playing the game, as if what they did made any difference to what will be passed into law.

So he walked out. Not worth his time to playact.

Now that the GOP majority feel their power is absolute, the veils can come down, the gloves can come off. No more pretending that this is really a democracy and that there are laws that must be followed even if they are inconvenient.

"No truly sophisticated proponent of repression would be stupid enough to shatter the façade of democratic institutions." -- Murray B. Levin, Political Hysteria in America, 1971

Sensenbrenner is not sophisticated. And at this point, he feels that he no longer needs to pretend to be. In his mind, one-party rule is permanent and the Dems who speak up (never mind the ones that still think they can get ahead by appeasement) are irrelevant annoyances that can be dismissed as a waste of his time.

44. Patriot Act Hits Home
I have a neighbor who was arrested by sheriff's deputies in his home. He was charged under the Patriot Act with making terrorist threats. His nut job neighbor got mad over a drainage ditch and called his friends at the station. My friend, in his 70s, a Viet Nam vet, a retired 20+ years public school teacher, and tireless neighborhood volunteer, was cuffed, taken into custody, spent the night in jail and actually went to trial before the case was thrown out. It has shattered his and his wife's peace of mind; they now live in fear and anger.

Be afraid, be very afraid.

Another time my friend sent me an anti-war bumper sticker, and some one at the post office opened the letter and tore my sticker in half. Believe me Big Brother is watching.

87. I hope you kept those items
You should contact one of the Dems (Conyers?) that sit on the House Judiciary Committe. We need to have a place for people to document all of these abuses of the unPatriot Act as they occur. I believe ht alot of this is going on, but because they seem like "little incidents", no one is documenting their occurences.

They did not seem too interested because they never sent me a response aside from letting me know they received my message. I do still have that anti-war committee mailing around here somewhere though, so if anyone knows of people documenting these abuses I will gladly present it to them.

53. That is very scary, and it's one of the
reasons why we all should be wary of The Patriot Act.

The power for abuse is evident, and how can we know in the future just WHO will be deemed a terrorist? Check out Section 802.

46. The Hill - Tempers Flare in Judiciary Committee Dust-up
Tempers Flare in Judiciary Committee Dust-up
By Josephine Hearn and Jonathan Kaplan
A House Judiciary Committee hearing on the renewal of the Patriot Act turned ugly this morning after Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) gaveled the proceedings to a close over the objections of Democrats.

Democrats continued to make statements and witnesses continued to offer testimony even after Sensenbrenner had left the room. C-SPAN cameras were still rolling as the committee's majority staff rushed to turn off microphones and lights on the Democrats, prompting the television crews to break out boom mikes.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said this afternoon that she wanted an apology from Sensenbrenner. "I will ask Speaker Hastert to order Mr. Sensenbrenner to apologize for his behavior to the witnesses at the hearing today, and to promise that this will never again happen," she said in a statement. Pelosi used the dust-up to highlight the Democrats broader message that Republicans are abusing their power. "The Republicans' abuse of power reached a new low this morning when they tried to silence Democrats at a hearing on the Patriot Act by cutting the microphones," she said. "I commend Judiciary Committee Democrats for continuing to question witnesses after the Republicans' shameful behavior, and for standing up for the institution of the House." Jeff Lungren, a spokesman for Sensenbrenner defended the chairman's actions.

"We operated according to committee and House customs and rules," he said. Every member got a full round of questioning. The hearing lasted roughly two hours so I don't know how would say it was cut off." "We have a number of members on our committee for whom 5 minutes is never enough. Five hours is closer. You're trying to be respectful of everyone's time and was very, very generous…Democrats wanted to turn a thoughtful review of the Patriot Act into open mic night at the Improv," he said

56. Write the DNC
I did, and this is what I wrote:

Sirs:

Today, Representative James Sensenbrenner, chairman of the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, used bullying tactics in not allowing the witnesses from groups, including Amnesty International USA, to speak, and acted with impunity in disrupting and overtaking a very important meeting.

It is my opinion that the Democrats present should have walked out rather than allowing Sensenbrenner to continue with his total disregard for the committee meeting procedures.

Rep. Mike Pence , R-Ind., accused Amnesty International of endangering the lives of Americans in uniform by referring to the prison at Guantanamo Bay as a "gulag." Any genocide is frequently referred to as a "holocaust", and calling Camp X-Ray a "gulag" is no different. This parsing of words has reached the limit of absurdity.

What transpired today is frightening in the abuse of power displayed, and it angers me that our nation is being forced to swallow all the GOP wishes and wants, with no discussion or true representation.

An apology from Sensenbrenner should be forthcoming, but he should also be removed from having any further participation in the judiciary committee proceedings.

I truly believe that all of the Democrats present should not return to these proceedings until it is guaranteed that the witnesses will be allowed to speak, and all present will come to a decision by acting fairly and in a bipartisan manner.

In the eyes of the world, and to my sensibilities as well, the unilateral action taken today brands the United States as a nation being led into fascism by a one-party state.

61. GOP Chairman Walks Out of Meeting (patriot act meeting)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/06/10/AR2005061001685_pf.html

WASHINGTON -- The Republican chairman walked off with the gavel, leaving Democrats shouting into turned-off microphones at a raucous hearing Friday on the Patriot Act.

The House Judiciary Committee hearing, with the two sides accusing each other of being irresponsible and undemocratic, came as President Bush was urging Congress to renew those sections of the post-Sept. 11 counterterrorism law set to expire in September.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., chairman of the panel, abruptly gaveled the meeting to an end and walked out, followed by other Republicans. Sensenbrenner declared that much of the testimony, which veered into debate over the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, was irrelevant.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., protested, raising his voice as his microphone went off, came back on, and went off again.

"We are not besmirching the honor of the United States, we are trying to uphold it," he said.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/11/politics/11patriot.html

The hearing had grown heated well before Mr. Sensenbrenner pounded the gavel. After Chip Pitts, chairman of Amnesty International, said the detentions in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, were "the gulag of our time," Representative Mike Pence, Republican of Indiana, called the comparison "anti-historical, irresponsible and the type of rhetoric that endangers American lives."

In a statement, Representative Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California and the minority leader, said, "The Republicans' abuse of power reached a new low this morning."

70. I just wrote to Sense-n-brain-less
I started out by ripping into him, then I thought, "I want this read by SOMEBODY at least." So instead I wrote:

Mr. Sensenbrenner, I just wanted to write and congradulate you for taking charge at the Patriot Act hearing and refusing to here any more BS evidence against the sunset clauses. The way you walked out while that Anmesty International jerkoff cried about a point of order, and then how the mikes were cut on them.....I was like Yeah! and waited to see if they'd be throne out. I mean God, what retards. Do they think we still live in a democracy or something?

Okay, it's childish. But the thought of someone in S's office getting to that last sentence soothes my rage a bit.

I will say this, though. I now outright HATE any and all who can willingly call themselves Republican after seeing this tyrannical abuse of power by the leader of the House Judiciary Committee. I've had it with the fascist Republican pigs infesting our government, their wetdreams of empire, and their brain-damaged Reich Wing supporters who think this is all good fun. They have made themselves enemies of justice, liberty and freedom, and that makes them enemies of this country and me.

73. If you live in the WI 5th CD
Send a letter to the Journal-Sentinel. They should be FLOODED with letters from outraged citizens who believe that by refusing to listen to all opinions, Jim Sensenbrenner is placing America at risk.

Here's the link. Let them hear from you.

http://www.jsonline.com/news/editorials/submit.asp

I know that some people don't believe a letter makes a difference, but I always use the analogy of a basketball coach arguing with the Referee. The Ref isn't going to change his call, but he knows that the coach is watching. These editorial boards make not react directly to your letter (other than to publish it) but when they receive dozens of angry letters on the same subject, it lets them know that the grassroots are pissed. It really can shape how they decide to report the news.

Get Writing!

75. I'm so angry. How can we fight back? Why isn't this front page? ...duh
Well, we know who owns the media, and who will soon own or destroy the public media.
So, now they can do anything they want. Shut down hearings, pass and pad this bogus "act," and then... arrest anyone who doesn't go along.

We are soooo dead.

Our rights are being slaughtered, and where is the protest?
We're up to 1700 so-called "counted" dead soldiers in Iraq and where's the protest?
The draft is coming, and where's the protest?
Funding is slashed, jobs are slashed, the hogs are at the trough but where's the protest?

Is anybody mobilizing? I mean, besides the continual plea for money? I may be an old fart, but I recall the Moratorium ... the one against the Vietnam War. It started really slow. We began by taking one day off -- no work, no school. Then we wanted to add to it and build. We had teach-ins and sit-ins and work stoppage. And it wasn't predicated on how much money any party got. It was just people. And so, I'm angry, and I want to know where all the other people are who are angry and ... what the heck can we DO about it?

This really has me peeved.

96. I am so SICK of these fascists!
If nothing else, these last five years have empowered me to open my mouth and say something every time I sense us getting closer and closer to a plutocracy. I feel it is my obligation to my children to be able to tell them, "I did what I could. I spoke out every time I saw injustice. I informed myself and I tried to inform those around me." I don't think a week goes by any more where I don't write letters like these:

Rep. Sensenbrenner:

You owe the Judiciary Committee, the Congress and the American people an apology for your outrageous behavior in violating procedure and ending the meeting re: the Patriot Act on Friday, June 10th. Indeed, I don't know that your apology is even enough. This kind of egregious abuse of power should result in nothing less than your resignation.

Is your sense of partisanship so embedded that you are unable to handle listening to something that may go against your beliefs? This neo-fascist behavior is unacceptable and you should be ashamed. The very point of a democracy is to allow for ALL voices, not just those of your party or larger donors. I recognize that the Republican party holds the majority in Congress. But let me remind you that you have sworn to uphold the Constitution for all Americans, not just those who share your ideology.

The Republican party seems to have forgotten that the pendulum swings back and forth. This "tyranny of the majority" will find that the price they must pay when the pendulum swings back will be truly dear.

An apology, sir, at the very least and VERY PUBLICLY. Nothing less is acceptable.

Re: Your recent behavior as House Judiciary Chairman

Representative Sensenbrenner:

I had the opportunity to review my recordings made from CSPAN over this past weekend and viewed the Patriot Act hearing that was held on 6/10/2005.

I’d like to personally thank you for confirming on television for the nation and the world reports I’ve been hearing for the past five years about the arrogant behavior of the majority in the House of Representatives.

Frankly, sir, though I have disagreed with many of your viewpoints in the past, I have never felt ashamed to have you as my representative in the United States House of Representatives. You have brought much shame on this great state with your childish behavior in this incident and the previous “sexual predators” incident.

Please keep in mind that your actions reflect on the 5th district’s people, and I can assure you that this constituent of yours is disgusted.
