The state Department of Housing and Community Development is giving the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition $1.6 million to build rental housing for farmworkers in Mecca.
The coalition is hoping to begin construction by the end of the year on an 88-bed building to house seasonal and migrant workers, said Mary Ann Ybarra, multifamily project manager for the Indio-based coalition. It is scheduled to open in time for the 2007 harvest, she said.

The need for farmworker housing is great, especially this time of year, during grape harvest, Ybarra said. Each season, hundreds of workers sleep in cars, parks and on the street, Ybarra said.

The state's money will be combined with $1.6 million from the nonprofit West Sacramento-based Rural Community Assistance Corporation, Ybarra said.
