MECCA: The $1.6 million will help provide 88 more beds for farmworkers, as well as a medical clinic.

Tuesday, June 14, 2005

By DAVID OLSON / The Press-Enterprise

The state Department of Housing and Community Development is giving the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition $1.6 million to build rental housing for farmworkers in Mecca.

The coalition is hoping to begin construction by the end of the year on an 88-bed building to house seasonal and migrant workers, said Mary Ann Ybarra, multifamily project manager for the Indio-based coalition. It is scheduled to open in time for the 2007 harvest, she said.

The need for farmworker housing is great, especially this time of year, during grape harvest, Ybarra said. Each season, hundreds of workers sleep in cars, parks and on the street, Ybarra said.

The state's money will be combined with $1.6 million from the nonprofit West Sacramento-based Rural Community Assistance Corporation, Ybarra said.

2. Whether we like it or not, obviously these people...
could afford these multi-million dollar homes, although it amazes me that there can be so many who can. Regardless, the point is the state is stepping up to the plate and doing something about the housing problem in the Coachella Valley. It's not like the state spent millions to build the rich people's homes. So what's crazy about it?

This is one of them stories that just keeps on giving to minute-men type groups. It's kind of funny this scum of newspaper can even print this story with a straight face.

Btw this particular Belo Corp paper has a bunch of new editors imported from Texas out here to California. They are a little slicker than that the last bunch but the taint in news still can be seen
