13. well, 43% are against the recall
if we can somehow raise that number to 51% in the next few hours, we win......or maybe I'm just grasping at straws

I can't see 47% voting for arnold though.

50. Yeah, but they said it was "high turnout"
On the positive side, there is no way that 59% of Californians "voted for a Republican".

Let's face it, The Republicans consider him a "RINO" who could win. It's obvious that we were unsucessfull in spinning him as some radical right-winger when most of California considers him just barely over that side of the fence. The people who wanted a "Republican" got slaughtered.

In short - This helps Bush, but hardly enough to make a dent.

17. This is more than just depressing
I am overwhelmed with the feeling we are all lambs being led to
slaughter. I have felt this election will mirror the 2004 presidential election. If these people can't see through the media
spin and realize Bush's economy has helped crush California's
economy and punish Gray Davis, in an undemocratic recall, rather
than use common sense and vote no, I for one am ready to give up on
politics. I need a long timeout - I'm beginning to think we over
at DU, BuzzFlash, etc. are the minority in this country. We take
the time to read and learn, we take the time to write or call our
representatives, we care but we are too few to make a difference.
The right wing stronghold on our country is too powerful and I am
so depressed right now I could cry.

If you're just figuring this out I can see why you're so depressed. But fear not! There's strength in numbers, even if they're small numbers.

We shall overcome.

25. don't give up...
at least not yet... early exit polls are sometimes very misleading. In my country in 1998, exit polls at 3:00pm showed the conservative candidate beating the socialdemocrat by 10%. He ended up winning by 2%, and in certain moments when results were coming in, he was ahead by less than 1%.

Early exit polls are not very reliable, and are used mostly by political parties to plan their turnout strategy for the last few hours.

And even if Schwarzenegger wins... yes, it will be tough. But you people are fighters, and you will be able to overcome this mess.

39. I have to disagree.................
that this is in any way a prelude to 2004. Remember, in 2004 BUSH has the role of Grey Davis and the Democratic challenger will be the Knight in Shining Armor.
This recall result reinforces my belief that Kaleeeeeefornia is nothing but form, not a bit of substance. The people of Kaleeeeeefornia deserve everything they get with Ahhhhhnold. The state has now surpassed Florida as the laughing stock of the nation.

If we lost this one, what makes you think we will win the next one? This is especially true if "the fix is in".

If anything it will hurt our chances in 04 BADLY. I can see the FOX news spins right now about how much dems are costing, how evil they are, trying to cheat democracy, etc. It will play right in to repub hands.

If anything after this we need to pull together and take back the congress and white house... Then we can focus on the states.

87. OK, we wait a year ...
... after Arnold starts screwing up, then we recall. Yeh, you might be right, that we couldn't win the next one. Also three years of Arnold stinking up the State may be enough to push some people over the edge (aka Jesse Ventura) and remove Arnold in the next term. Though it may mean ruin for California.

Say, if Arnold decides to not to pursue the lawsuit against the enegry companies, would that be grounds for recall?

I dunno... since he announced his candidacy I had thought that the Groper-nator was a done deal, but had gotten optimistic over the last couple days.

If this "walnut-stuffed condom" really does become Governor of CA I think I'm going to need a long break from politics. My grades are already slipping worse than ever this semester anyway...

Here's hoping for the best, Californians! (And even if the worst happens, at least be proud you aren't in Texas!) I'm an agnostic, but I'm still praying Davis is able to pull this one out. I'm also a pessimist, though, so I'm not really looking for any miracles.

I am the eternal optimist but if they got their exit poll results from lets say, Pasadena and Orange Co., then of course the numbers are going to be high. You just can't trust rethuglican numbers. Let's hope.

BTW, my rethuglican father lives in Ca. (love ya anyway, dad) and while he was in favor of the recall, he wouldn't vote for ahnold. He was for McClintock. Don't hold it against me! My point being, one less rethug vote for Conan the Barbarian.

We know that the polls have not closed, the turnout has been huge, and that the absentee votes are waiting to be counted (the unions have really been pushing voting that way). This is not over until it is over and at this point, things are faaaar from over.

80. I did and I stand by my statement
While Arnold was being hung out to dry on the drudge NOBODY thought drudge was unreliable. I saw at least 6 linked posts. The "kill the messenger" mentality is nothing short of denial around here. If the "mooney press" were to predict night will follow day, any here would proudly declare how they will wait for a reliable source.

I see this election going poorly and I am mad as hell. I am sick and tired of the crybaby, fixed machine, cutesy name calling hatred that seems to be driving our party right out of the system and into the fringe. We are a viable party with good issues and respectable candidates, but all the public gets to see are the fools and the extremes. I am pissed at the face that has been put on the Dem party.

60. This is the results of not addressing the problems.
We need to talk about issues and not spend so much time throwing mud that we end up as the only ones soiled.

I have said it before, cutesy name calling...chimp, shrub, asscroft, gropinator, pukes....may make you feel good and get a titter out of people around here but it does not resonate with the general voting public. I think Bush got HUGE yardage out of "new tone" rhetoric. People are tired of the politics of personal destruction and I think this proves it. Everything was thrown at Arnold, EVERYTHING.

I fear that the blind hatred is edging out real dscussion about issues. I never heard Davis address 1 single issue about the economy and finances of California. Instead he chose to rally against Arnold. I pray this is not the path we chose for the 2004 elections. The impeach Bush movement went nowhere, and I think the "anyone but Bush" is also a defeatist attitude that will not fly with everday voters. If you want to enjoy a partisan websight, fine...but I would rather win an election or 2. I find it diffcult to believe that our pool of candidates is so shallow that "anyone but Bush" would seriously be concidered.

Of course you may now flame and go back to your dsbelief and rants while I sit back and worry about the emminent demise of our party.

88. demdave
Your last couple of posts on this thread have been excellent. I completely agree with your views here. I have expressed the same point many times in the past, but I fear too many on our side have allowed rage and hate to very nearly push them off the deep end.

Though I have gone through periods of optimism recently with the spate of good news we have seemingly had, I am deeply worried about 04'. The numerous "Bush is done" and "Bush is toast" threads on DU just scream that too many good Democrats sorely underestimated just how difficult it will be to defeat Bush in 04'. I remember Reagan in 83' and how so many thought he wouldn't be able to win the following year because of his low poll numbers - and we all surely remember the landslide that took place.

If the economy picks up and a majority of Americans begin to accept the situation in Iraq as "acceptable", we could be in for an utter disaster in 04'. The Democratic Party will be hard pressed just to hold even in House and Senate as it is. If Bush runs strong it could be an utter trainwreck which could take a generation to reverse.

Polls are a joke.
Drudge is a joke pawn.
The cabal will have their media cabal partners claim wins no matter what anyone knows.
News networks were not supposed to report exit poll results when exit polls were a part of the process, but now they can say anything.
A sex predator is being pushed by major media.
The machines are rigged and only a few people care.
The people of CA will pay twice for the Enron theft.

The only breath left is if enough people make it known how they feel in spite of the thieving machines, thieving judges, thieving citizens who could care less about the integrity of their vote.

Because it is just not logical in the American sense of good judgement that they will vote for a predator who makes vilent movies and who is going to reverse the lawsuit and allow right wing takeovers of the state.

Pay twice? Let's hope not.

Drudge is decidedly NOT a fan of Arnold's. Perhaps this is a little disinfo he's putting out to quell the Pro-arnold vote. If you read that he's winning comfortably, maybe they'll stay home.

Even if he turns out to be right here, he's probably just guessing. He predicted everything wrong in 2002, every lead this man gets turns out to be bogus. I swear he must make up his stories, because they are never right.

I'm not saying he's wrong here, only that if he is right, it's purely coincidental. Read the moron for entertainment value, but don't expect to get anything out of it.

the threads here today and said "Why bother? It's a DONE DEAL!"

If the intent of this site is to get rid of George Bush in 04 then I hope today was an excellent lesson in how to shoot ones own self in the foot.

I avoided DU intentionally most of the day since I KNEW it was going to be like this.

Already our home grown pundits have predicted defeat and the polls don't close for over an hour.
