U.S. lifts passport restrictions for Iraq
<http://famulus.msnbc.com/FamulusIntl/reuters07-15-123548.asp?reg=MIDEAST>

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said Iraq was safer for Americans now than it was before the U.S. invasion because of the overthrow of President Saddam Hussein.
''There was a hostile regime which sought to sometimes use Americas ... as human shields and intentionally put them in harm's way. Now there is a government structure In Iraq that seeks to protect all people,'' he said.

Call me crazy, but in my ever so humble opinion, I don’t believe the picture Boucher is painting is in touch with reality.
:crazy:

1. This administration's view of reality
I believe that the Bush administration considers reality highly overrated. However, I do not think that we have to worry about too many Americans visiting Iraq. I do not imagine that Iraq will become a popular tourist destination in the near future.

2. They don't need it to be true
Just as long as there is the perception that it is safer than before the fall of Saddam. Perception is everything. And, as Oldcoot said, there aren't that many Americans that will voluntarily travel to Iraq for holidays, so the list of witness accounts stays rather compressed. Though I do think there's more behind this. Is it possible that they need this lifting of restrictions to enable some other possibilities...thinking Haliburton and the sorts.

3. I’m in total agreement….
Those looking to sip a pena colada on the shores of the Euphrates will be vastly outnumbered by those arriving with dollar signs in their eyes.

4. Mr. Boucher says...
..."Iraq was safer for Americans now than it was before the U.S. invasion because of the overthrow of President Saddam Hussein."

So tell me again, Mr. Boucher... I've forgotten. How many snipings and other near-death experiences did Americans in Iraq experience per week before the invasion?
