White House: soaring new debt figures "manageable"
(White House-AP) - The White House is set to forecast a big jump in the already-record federal deficit, but a spokesman says the red ink remains "manageable." <cut

And McClellan says the administration's on course to cut the number in half in "a few years."

The administration blames the deficit on a recession that depressed revenues, and the war on terror -- which inflated costs.

But Democrats say the big Bush tax cuts get most of the blame. And they say the deficit will be bigger than forecast -- because it doesn't include the future cost of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

6. $450 Billion, my a*s!
I thought it might hit $500 billion this year, but now I am quite sure that we are looking at $550-600 billion!

Folks, this shit is unbelievable!

The White House has missed every forecast by 30-50% in the past.

They will miss it again by a huge margin!

8. The $450B doesn't include $150B ...
... of continued 'borrowing' from the Social Security Trust Fund, either. :puke:

7. Sure, just get rid of social security, medicare and other social programs
Let's fact it -- the deficits are all part of the Republican master plan to repeal the Great Society and the New Deal. The Republicans can't take these programs on directly (other than welfare perhaps), so they keep pushing for more tax cuts until the government is completely starved of revenue.

10. Ooh, it's not as bad as the percentage of GNP in the Reagan years
Now THAT'S a defense. It's not as bad as the slobbering stupidity of another Republican Greedfest. Well, I feel safe. Isn't Ronnie the schmuck who tripled the national debt? Oh, yeah, the Dems controlled the House, that's right, it's their fault even though ALL Republicans go with the crowd and only enough Dems cross over to give them their way. That's not the evils of the Democrats causing all the problems.

At least they're not using the comparison with 1946, it must be hard to whistle a merry tune and put a big smile on comparing our current situation with the aftermath of the greatest upheaval and calamity in the history of human civilization...

12. Talk about re-writing history....!!!
Anyone here remember when Ronnie Reagan was running for President and the entire time during his two terms how "the deficit" (nowhere near what it is now) was the BIG American problem? Why was it such a big problem? Because all those lazy, good-for nothing welfare cheats and welfare queens were sapping the lifeblood out of the US by draining the US treasury for social services. Remember, the deficit was bahaaaaaaaaaad! And it was bad because of welfare and other social spending. This was preached night and day and in every campaign in the 80's. It was one of those "wedge" issues with a racial overtone and most Americans (bigots that they are) jumped on the anti-deficit bandwagon (although other voices were saying that it was a false issue for the richest nation on earth with the standard of living that we had) Now, all of a sudden "the deficit" is no big deal. A deficit is a good thing for a down economy and it is "manageable."

The Dems have a golden opportunity to hammer home this point and challenge the Republicans for the lying hypocrites that they are. Some of the very people...Greenspan included ...who were so vehement about deficits during the 80's are just trying to blow this off. What it means to me is that either deficts are important and worrisome OR the Republicans will use any kind of divisive scare tactic to pit white America against blacks and other minorities. During the 80's the word "deficit" became one of those code words like "law and order" "welfare queen" and "extreme left."

Can anyone else see through these tactics?

13. Of course they're "manageable"......
The Repugs can manage to get us into a phoney war with Iraq, can manage to get their friends tax cuts, can manage to lie to the nation.

I'm sure they'll manage to get the debt figures soaring out of control too.

16. In a way, I agree with them....
...these deficits are manageable.

First, we win the presidency and at least one house of Congress.

Then we repeal all of these shameful tax cuts.

Then, we heap some really punitive taxes on the uber-rich to teach them a lesson :)

Yeah, it can be managed - just not by the bozos running things right now.

17. Maybe THIS will force the Dems to unite!
They have got to become "one voice" and what better way to do it. Someone above mentioned the Reagan mess and how it nearly crippled the country....come on Dem leaders....try to remember!
