Senate Democrats Block Bolton Confirmation
WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats blocked John Bolton's confirmation as U.N. ambassador for the second time Monday and President Bush left open the possibility of bypassing lawmakers and appointing the tough-talking former State Department official on his own.

The vote was 54-38, six shy of the total needed to force a final vote on Bolton, and represented an erosion in support from last month's failed Republican effort. Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio), who voted in May to advance the nomination, switched positions and urged Bush to consider another candidate, while only three Democrats crossed party lines.

9. At the end of the vote, I saw Nelson go chit-chat with Frist.
Frist patted him affectionately on the back and then Nelson walked up the Republican aisle.

So.... just how much Democratic campaign money (DSCC, etc.) goes to Nelson??

13. The way it works is
A Senator who may be damaged by a vote waits to make sure his or her vote isn't needed, then if it's safe, votes against. Those three are from some seriously wingnut states, and they don't need to give the mouthbreathers ammunition unnecessarily.

12. Frist is really getting senile now
"Some on the other side of the aisle are obstructing a highly qualified nominee and I believe by not allowing him to assume this position yet are doing harm to our country," Frist said.

Highly qualified for what? Prison guard?

We are doing harm to the country by NOT allowing his confirmation?

Another great diagnosis by Doctor Death.

16. 54-38 and the DEMS have blocked it?
There aren't 54 Dems in the Senate. So, I guess that would be a misleading article that does not focus on the fact that it appears bipartisan.

17. OR, alternatively, you don't understand a cloture vote
54 voted to end debate and continue on to a vote.

38 voted to continue debate (i.e., they blocked the ending of the debate)

The GOP needs 60 to end debate, and they only got 54.
