Bush supports Vietnam in WTO
Tue Jun 21, 2005 11:21 AM ET

By Tabassum Zakaria
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush told Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai on Tuesday that he supports Vietnam's bid to join the World Trade Organization, in the first visit by the Vietnamese leader since the war.

Bush also said he would visit Vietnam in 2006, the year it plays host to the annual summit of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

"We talked about our desire for Vietnam to join the WTO," Bush told reporters in an Oval Office picture-taking session after their talks.

Vietnam has set a goal of joining the WTO at the trade organization's next ministerial meeting in December in Hong Kong. The U.S. Congress would have to vote on any deal to allow Vietnam to join the WTO, as it did with China in 2000.

15. It's a PR ruse to offer the implication he cares about Iraq
By stating he'll go to Vietnam, and with the comparisons of Iraq to Vietnam, he, and no doubt in reality, Karl Rove, are simply offering a false crumb from the dinner table in the guise of caring about Iraq. And, gollygeewillikers! Going in 2006? With the number of Repubs calling for withdrawal in Iraq to begin no later than October, 2006, so they can keep their seats in the house and senate, this has to be a PR move to placate them. This won't be the last move by BushCo to try to keep the Repub politicos from drawing further away from the current administration and its BS political platform.

On the other hand, this could be a signal that BushCo is seeking to shore up support and control over the third part of the Axis of Evil, North Korea. Ya think Condi and/or Rumsfeld will make the Vietnam trip before the Naked Boy King does?

17. This is probably his little snide way of conveying that...
he intends on staying in office through next year - at least!

Well, we all know about the Greek fallacy of hubris, don't we?

He's down so low now that any tick-up in his approval ratings will be played up as a "comeback."

We can discuss the facts of this man until we are blue in the face, but the sad truth is that voters will vote on impression, image, and belief come 2006 and 2008.

I can't think of any more non-sequitors at this time.

Writer.

21. Maybe he can take McCain with him
and McCain can show him where HE WAS TORTURED while Bush hoovered coke and drank himself cross eyed..

Plus another chance for McCain to kiss Bush's ass just like he ended up doing with his torturers, the ones that made that video where McCain called America a shit stain..

Having been broken is no insult... but kissing Bush's ass after his pals in N Carolina put out the word that McCain had a "nigger" daughter (a dark skinned girl they had generously adopted) during the primaries in the first Selection of Bush made me lose all faith in McCain..

Hope Bush doesn't meet any pissed off expatriat deserters over there..

32. Viet Nam is now integrating into the wider capitalist world
I guess it shows that if the U.S. would have just left them alone, they would have gone this route anyway, with a lot less bloodshed. The same is probably true of Iraq - at least I think that is the natural conclusion to draw.

Not that integrating into the wider capitalist world is an unalloyed good; just that getting out of Viet Nam turned out to be no great disaster for U.S. and western interests.

36. The U.S. Can Still Be a Big Winner in Vietnam (LA Times)
What you point out is true enough, daleo.

A recent article (LA Times):

The U.S. Can Still Be a Big Winner in Vietnam

Vietnam still touches a raw nerve in the United States. Even as President Bush prepares to receive Prime Minister Phan Van Khai today — 30 years after the last U.S. troops left, and 10 years after the two nations reestablished diplomatic relations — some Americans continue to see the Vietnamese as the enemy. There are veterans who viscerally distrust those they once engaged in combat. Some in the Vietnamese American community would rather fly the flag of the defunct Republic of Vietnam than recognize the geopolitics of 21st century Asia. And there are those who oppose reconciliation for ideological reasons.

<snip>
As an American who has spent seven years working in Vietnam for the United Nations, I can attest that most Vietnamese — from high officials to ordinary citizens — are ready to engage fully with the United States economically, diplomatically and culturally. The Vietnamese are equally united in their insistence that this relationship be one of mutual respect.

Vietnam is one of the most dynamic countries in the world. Nearly 60% of its 80 million people were born after the end of the American War, as they call it, and don't dwell on it. Two decades of economic and political reform have returned the land to farmers, freed the private sector, liberalized trade and opened the door to international investors.

The U.S.-Vietnam commercial relationship is strong. The trade agreement signed with Washington five years ago was an economic bullet train that the Vietnamese did not miss. Exports to the U.S. are up sixfold, and imports from the U.S. have trebled since 2000.

46. Bush Plans To Visit Vietnam
http://wcco.com/politics/politicsnational_story_172074358.html

President Bush says he will be traveling to Vietnam next year, as that country hosts a summit of leaders from Pacific Rim nations.

Mr. Bush made the announcement as he met with Vietnam's visiting prime minister at the White House. It's the first visit by a Vietnamese leader to the U.S. since the end of the war there 30 years ago.

Mr. Bush also praised the communist nation's economic progress, steps toward religious freedom and continued efforts to find the remains of U.S. troops who died in the Vietnam War.

The two leaders talked about Vietnam's desire to join the World Trade Organization, business issues, human rights and signed an agreement that the president said would make it easier for people to worship freely in Vietnam. ...

Better yet, he should be going to Iraq to finish his service. That was the punishment for going AWOL from the TANG. You got sent to Vietnam.

on the the Bill Maher HBO show, ignoring our coziness with Red China, and arguing how Vietnam is such a horrible waste now, irredeemable really and that Kerry is basically one of the people responsible for us losing that war and letting it become that way? Where is he now? These people will say anything.

Bush will find a stunningly exotic country ruled (dominated really) by the people of northern Vietman, the winners, regarded by center and southern region people as uncouth and brutish, so he is in his element.
