Iraq Violence Higher Than Anticipated - Straw

By Katherine Haddon, PA Political Staff

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw today told MPs that the level of violence in Iraq is “higher than was anticipated“.

He told MPs at question time the extent of the destruction was “unacceptable” but added that the coalition did not have an “open-ended” commitment to staying in the troubled country.

Ian Lucas (Lab Wrexham) said that members were “very concerned” at reported high levels of violence in Iraq.

“What reassurance can you let me have that you consider the situation is navigable, is proceeding and that real progress is being made?” Mr Lucas asked Mr Straw.
“Violence is at an unacceptable level, higher than was anticipated,” the Foreign Secretary responded.

I remember Cheney saying something contrary to this recently...?

4. So, what is an "acceptable" level of violence, Mr. Straw?
How many dead do you think would have been "acceptable" as a price for this little quagmire?
