Study: Married men earn more if wives do the chores

Married men earn more if wives do the chores-study
--------------------
Married men earn more than bachelors so long as their wives stay at home doing the housework, according to a report on Wednesday from Britain's Institute for Social and Economic Research (ISER).

Academics Elena Bardasi and Mark Taylor found that a married man whose wife does not go out to work but is primarily responsible for the cooking and cleaning earns about 3 percent more than comparably employed single men.

But that wage premium disappears if wives go out to work themselves or don't do most of the housework.

"It has been fairly well documented that married men earn more than single men," Taylor, a labour economist, told Reuters.

"However, our research established the wage premium is related to the wife doing the chores," said the academic who teaches at the University of Essex.

47. Well said. Lets do the math
Married man makes 3% more if wifey does all the housework.

So instead of making lets give a generous $40K per annum, he makes 41.2K.

Whoopee!

Much better than having the wife go out and make 20-30 or 40K herself if she chooses.

What some men won't do to get out of cleaning house. (Me too, for that matter.)

...that means she could, conceivably, live independent of her husband if she needed to. You KNOW we can't have that....:sarcasm:

Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 08:56 AM by gorbal
They are screwing around with cause and effect with that story. Which came first, the rich guy or the homemaker? Most women can't AFFORD to stay home and do housework, although some would actually like to.

3% isn't really much considering that there would be more money comeing in if both worked.

Men who earn more money can be choosier, and may marry women who agree to do more housework.

PLUS, if a woman works she more than makes up for the testicular whinebags shortfall anyway.

Of course the unmarried guy spends more time on housework, and is consequently more tired and less productive (experience speaking here).

28. I Think So Too, *But*
A guy who makes more money (and it doesn't even have to be a guy) is more likely to be able to support a homemaker than one who makes less.

As for the mere 3% difference, "I've got a wife/family to support" is often a successful way to get a raise. Employers will justify this.

Well, duh! Why wouldn't ANYONE who can come home to a clean house, eat dinner without planning or preparing it, then sack out in front of the TV while the dished are being wash be a less distracted, less stressed, and more energetic employee? Women with a stay-at-home husbands who do all the housework, and single people with roomate who do all the housework probably earn more money than their single counterparts, too. To figure that out, someone had to do a freaking STUDY????

20. obvious motives of this "study" aside...
all they have shown is that a married couple that partitions domestic and professional tasks has a possible advantage over (1) a married couple that does not partake in such a division of labor and (2) a single male. I fail to see how this study (at least as the article describes it) can speak to a particular male-female dynamic advantage which leads to the claim that "married men earn more if wives do the chores."

To begin to make such a study complete they would have to run a parallel comparison of single women and married women who earn an income while the husbands stay home and perform varied degrees of domestic tasks. This would have to take into account the percentage income gap that already exists between men and women.

31. Me Too!
I only earned half as much as you but after I added it all up -- childcare, gas, even lunches and work clothes, I decided to stay home with the girls. I was starting to envy the nanny when I left in the morning, because if I had to work late I saw them for like an hour before bedtime.

I can sort of see this working with either spouse -- if you have someone whose main job is dealing with the kids and school and house stuff then of course, it is easier for the other spouse to work more hours, go on business trips, work for an advanced degree or whatever. I think it would work the same if I was working and he held down the fort here though!

I get married, but my wife still works, I still earn $X.
Wifey STOPS working, suddenly I earn ($X)1.03.

WHY?
It sure as shit isn't because I have more time to "Hone" my job skills. Like I'm going to bring VCR's home? or stay at work another 2 hours working instead of going home and cleaning the fish tank?

That whole article sounded like Bullshit. And it's allegedly a BRITISH study.

In one of the check-out tabloids, I think maybe "Weekly World News", ALL of the most bizarre stories come from Britain. Come to think of it, the style they're written in is similar to that Reuter's story.

37. It doesn't sound that outlandish - you just have 2 people supporting 1
position so the "breadwinner" dedicates more time to the work.

As half of a same sex couple I think one of us might earn more if the other could pick up all the other daily chores. But it wouldn't be a gender thing (obviously), just allocation of resources. And of course one of us still wouldn't earn more than both of us.

39. Logical
The study is bias in only studying the MEN and not trying to further understand what the info means.

The reality is, a stay at home parent is a House Hold Manager. That means there is a full time person who is responsible for not only the HOME, but the children, doctor appointments, teacher appointments, class assignments, sport events, etc. These things take time and energy to do. And can be stressful at times.

A Nanny could do the job as well.... Another words, a person could be HIRED to do the job if need be.

As to why a person who has such a House Hold Manager could earn more... it's very easy. Less personal calls on the job, less family emergencys requiring their immediate attention. This makes them more reliable on the job. They can work late at a momment's notice. Play kiss ass golf when needed... See the point?

This is one of the resons for that Glass Ceiling that has been bothering women for years. It was considered unacceptable that the HUSBAND would pick up certian responsiblities if the WOMAN'S job demanded he do so. It was automaticly expected for the wife to do such things, if the MAN'S job required her to do so. I'm talking by society as a whole, not the husband and wife. A single person was seen as not taking life seriously and a single person with children was seen as someone with no "back-up."

Things are changing. Men are no longer terrorized by their friends and peers if the wife brings home more bacon then he does. Instead... they are jeoulus of him. ;) This USE to be a very, very big deal. Now, men can be the "stay at home" person.

What they found is very logical. But they need to also include working couples with Nannys, Singles with Nannys, Wife who works/husband that stays at home. Other words, they are not getting a true picture of what they are trying to study.

Oh, that's right. They are trying to prove that wifes should stay at home. LOL! Oh well, me bad.

(do I even need to use the "sarcasm" smiley for that?)

This "study" was so messed up from the get-go, it's not even worth ranting about.
Their "parameters and preconceptions" MIGHT have had some TINY amount of validity back in 1955 or so....

....if "Leave It to Beaver" wasn't FICTION...

...and key word being "MIGHT".

But way back in the 1980s,
(here in the 'Reality-Based' world),
Some of our top research scientists discovered a FUNDAMENTAL CLICHE.

4 simple words which 'sum-up' this alleged "study":
"Garbage in, garbage OUT."

And that's all I have to say about THAT.

49. I'm sure the same is true reversing the genders as well
Marriage is a partnership, and if one covers the home front and one
the foreign front, its sorta like "domestic" and "foreign"... and when
one is out of kilter, the other suffers as well.

Who doesn't want to come home to a clean house, with bills paid, with
clean sheets, a clean bathroom, with healthy cooked food, loved children
and details sorted. It allows the "breadwinner" to keep their balance
in an unstable world. I think this study simply states the bleedin
obvious... just that they're wrong about tying it to gender. A
working woman needs a "wifey" as much as a working man.

50. Huh. I read this whole thread and am not offended by one post.
Nice work, responsible adults of DU. Excellent. The most picky of all contributors is appeased--that's hard to do. All Dems together, now: Try again, Karl.

63. Nobody is rating this story, it seems it only has 19 votes
What about men who stay home while the wife goes to work anyway?

Hell I got a laundry list of HONEY-do's that could keep me busy for years.

Lots of guys I talk to say being at work is much easier than being at home
