Democrats see Social Security ‘bait and switch’
Leaders fear package with private accounts will lure some in partyBy Tom Curry

Updated: 4:33 p.m. ET June 22, 2005WASHINGTON -

A group of House Republicans unveiled a Social Security redesign measure Wednesday with a private retirement accounts provision that would be funded through the excess revenues now flowing into the Social Security system.

The proposal differs from one that President Bush has been seeking for months, which would be funded by workers’ choosing to divert some of their tax payments into private accounts.

In 2004, Social Security, which operates on a pay-as-you-go basis, collected $145 billion in excess revenues not needed to pay that year’s benefits.

Two leading Senate Democrats immediately warned of a "bait-and-switch" plan by Republicans.
Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the senior Democrat on the Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over Social Security, and Sen. Charles Schumer of New York, who also serves on the Finance Committee, voiced their fears Wednesday that Bush and his allies in Congress would win private retirement accounts in the end by wrapping them in a glimmering package which would include tax breaks, retirement savings incentives, and perhaps pension reforms.

3. So...there's $145 BILLION surplus for just one year...
and yet social security is in dire straits and needs to be "saved". I'd say it needs to be saved all right, from the crooked Pukes running the country.

4. AGAIN with the idea that there's a Bush proposal on the table
Where is this proposal from Bush? What are the specifics? How much does it cost? Where will the funds come from to pay for it? Is there a phase-in period? How does it affect projected benefits for people making less than $20,000 per year? Up to $40,000 per year? Up to $100,000 per year? Are there different projections for people under and over 50? Under and over 35? What "proposal" is Tom Curry talking about???

5. Insanity!
The more I think about this, the more I'm inclined to believe the Democrats should simply say this:

-- The SS system is in reasonably good shape for the next 40-50 years.
-- Recently, and throughout its history, the Republican party has demonstrated repeatedly that they intend to inflict harm on the SS system. Therefore they simply cannot be trusted to deal with the system in good faith.
-- In order to protect the program, the Democrats will NOT support ANY meddling with the system while the present regime is in power. It's not about obstruction and it's not about politics. It's about protecting and preserving SS for the people until a better day; a day when the country is in responsible hands. No possibility of compromise. No further discussion. End of story. Now lets get on with the people's real concerns...

Such an approach would be simple, easy to grasp, completely honest and true, very believable, and entirely sensible. And behind closed doors they should make it clear that if ANY DINO defects, a massive effort will be made to bury them in the next election.

8. Excellent sales pitch, Iowa
Especially "a day when the country is in responsible hands." With the current roller coaster like plunge in the polls for Mr. "Disassembly" and his trollish minions, I think that kind of pitch might just take hold with some real power.

Jesus H. Commanche, how I long for the day when adults run our nation again. Has it only been five years since this bully stole our marbles and pissed in our shoes?
