Annan calls for international sharing of burden in Iraq

Big News Network.com Wednesday 22nd June, 2005

Opening an international conference on Iraq in Brussels Wednesday, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan urged the international community to share more broadly the burden of the reconstruction and stabilization of the war-torn country in a way that has a positive impact on the lives of ordinary Iraqis.

look to this conference for a clear sign that the international community will be their determined and dedicated companions on the tough road that they must walk to achieve a stable, peaceful, democratic Iraq,” Mr. Annan told the one-day conference co-hosted by the European Union and the United States.

“By our words, and more importantly by our deeds we must reassure them that we will not let them down,” he added.

1. Gee, that didn't work last year when the violence was less than it is now.
It bloody well ain't gonna work now.

Call all ya like, Annan, but until the US gets the fuck OUT of Iraq, ain't nobody stupid enough to go in.

2. Well I can see his heart is in the right place.
He's trying to support our troops. I can imagine many world leaders saying, you got your ass into this mess, you can get your self out. But I beleive Annan realizes that it's not the US soldier, dying in Iraq, that got himself into a mess. It's not our soldiers fault that our leader is a fuck-tard. HE got us into this mess. I can only see this being a good thing if the UN takes over the supervision of the fledgling Iraqi government. If the US can be made to relinquish control, and place it's military presence under the command of an international peacekeeping body, then maybe the violence against our troops will decrease.

I'm just saying that, while most Muricans think that our soldeirs are over there "fighting for our freedom" (How exactly they can do that while there all the way over in Iraq is beyond me, I mean honestly, how exactly can anyone all the way over there do anything to encroach upon our freedom?) Many of us call it like we see it, they're there so that Halliburton can steal all of Iraq's oil, and so the authors of PNAC can have there wettest dreams come true. I'm certain that many Iraqi citizens see things the way we do, only from alot closer up. There people are dying by the thousands, and the soldiers who were supposed to free them from an awful dictator are enabling another awful dicator to steal their oil.

If an organization of neutral, international supervisors came in, and demostrated their willingness to put the needs of Iraq before their own, opposition might decrease.

Bush standing over Annan shaking his fist: "Read it! Read it!"

Why else would he make such a worthless, patronizing speach.

...urged the international community to share more broadly the burden of the reconstruction and stabilization
Why should they when the cause of the problem (the invaders) remains in control. He doesn't even mention the US. The illegal invasion. The death, destruction and theft.

By our words, and more importantly by our deeds we must reassure them that we will not let them down
And how will the UN do that Mr Annan? By taking all steps to bring war criminals to justice? By ensuring reparations are paid for the illegal destruction of their country? By admitting the decade of sanctions were criminal?

Iraq's newly elected authorities
hmmm

“Iraqis must find it within themselves to reach out to one another and address issues on which they may differ.”
patronizing

...faster progress is needed in reconstruction, development and humanitarian assistance
Then why did you not return Iraq's 12 billion held in trust to Iraqis instead of to the invaders, so that Iraqi contractors could rebuild the country at one tenth the cost of the carpetbaggers?

The UN will do nothing. No country would get involved in this mess if they weren't forced to. Maybe NATO countries will train a few more Iraqi policemen in Kuwait. That's about it. The UN has no credibilty in Iraq.

4. Good Post...
Annan has no credibility anymore.

He's from Africa, but rock stars speak with more clout on African poverty, the Congo is a mess, Haiti is compromised, Darfur is no better now than 3 years ago under the AU, the UN Millenium Project is 'old neoliberal wine in new bottles', the US/UK pissed on his inspectors and his Aids programs, and he has family members' a little too close to the highly questionable 'oil for food' scam.

If you cared about the UN, Annan--you would retire...
