Texas Governor Commutes 28 Death Sentences
Texas Governor Commutes 28 Death Sentences

Wed Jun 22,11:54 PM ET

Responding to the Supreme Court's ruling that juveniles cannot be executed, Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Wednesday commuted 28 death sentences to life in prison for inmates who were under 18 when they committed capital murder.

The Supreme Court forced the commutations with its March ruling that executing juveniles violates the Eighth Amendment ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

Texas — the nation's most active death penalty state — was one of 18 states that allowed the practice.

1. When I read the headline...
...I knew it had to be something that was done grudgingly, not by choice...

Good news, but sad that there are still people who want the state to murder its people (especially the children......)

7. hey, this IS progress folks!
Texas has been IGNORING the Supremes on this one for eons. We keep sending up cases that read like, "we didn't quite hear you last time, are you sure that's what you meant?"

So Gov. Goodhair actually COMMUTING these sentences is actually a relief.
