Grand jury clears 3 Halliburton protesters

Three protesters accused of assaulting Houston police officers at a demonstration outside a Halliburton meeting in May have been cleared of criminal charges.

A Harris County grand jury concluded that there was insufficient reason to believe the three young men had committed a crime. They had been charged with assault on a public servant, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The three were among 15 protesters arrested on May 18 in the melee outside the Four Seasons Hotel downtown, where the Houston-based energy services firm was holding its annual shareholder meeting.

The men who were nobilled on June 16 are Andrew Peterson, 17, a high school junior from Austin; David Martinez, 25, a San Francisco-based activist; and James Foley, 19, of Galveston.

Also among those arrested were eight members of the group Houston Global Awareness Collective, who dressed in business attire and formed a human chain blocking entry to the meeting. Most of them pleaded guilty to misdemeanor trespassing and were sentenced to time served.
