Huff Post: Cheney Checks Into Vail Hospital...
Edited on Fri Jun-24-05 09:57 PM by Pirate Smile
Vice President Dick Cheney was taken to the cardiac unit of the Vail Valley Medical Center. Contrary to Associated Press reports that he went to see orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Steadman, for a knee injury, Vice President Cheney went directly to the cardiac unit to see Dr. Jack Eck and his team. The Vice President checked into the hospital under the name of Dr. Hoffman.

Here is the AP article:

Cheney Visits Orthopedist in Colorado

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: June 24, 2005
Filed at 9:21 p.m. ET

VAIL, Colo. (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney visited a renowned orthopedist Friday while in town for a forum held by a conservative think tank, his spokeswoman said.

Cheney met with Dr. Richard Steadman to evaluate an old football injury to his knee, Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride said.

Steadman focuses primarily on sports medicine, and his Steadman Hawkins Clinic has treated a number of famous athletes. In 2003, Los Angeles Lakers player Kobe Bryant was in Vail for knee surgery at the clinic when he was accused of raping a hotel worker.

Cheney was scheduled to attend the American Enterprise Institute World Forum, which was started in 1982 by former President Gerald Ford.

edit to also add Arianna's earlier post on this:

Is Cheney Alright?
I just landed at Vail airport, right next to the Vice President’s Gulfstream jet (actually, there were two Vice Presidential planes, not one... how much of an entourage does one VP need?). He’s here to speak at the World Forum at Beaver Creek, sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute, and held, of course, behind closed doors. The guy sent to pick me up by the Vail Valley Institute (where I’m speaking) told me that he had seen the VP’s motorcade speed towards the local hospital. Being an intrepid HuffPost reporter, I asked him to take me straight there. Upon our arrival, we encountered a high level of security -- and a lot of zipped lips: “We cannot tell you anything,” “No comment,” “That information is not available...” But one hospital staffer, obviously not schooled in the secretive ways of Cheney, let it slip: “He’s no longer here”. And since you cannot “no longer” be someplace you’ve never been, we can deduce -- though not confirm -- that Cheney did, in fact, pay a visit to the local hospital. The reason? Over to you AP...

Isn't there still a nepotism law on the books that prevents that? The Republicans put it in because of Bobby Kennedy.

amendment that requires siblings and heirs of sitting Presidents to wait at least 20 years before they can run for President.

That will prevent families like the * from using Father's appointees to help idiot sons to steal the Presidency and will make damn sure that the U.S. is NOT an inherited monarchy.

I am starting to think too much like them.

146. It will be the speaker of the house
Hastert. He's icky too but they don't get to pick just anybody unless they really want to expose that this is a dictatorship. There are rules of succession.

The interesting thing to me is that Cheney is actually the President. No matter how much we revile the Idiot Son, he is merely a figurehead. Cheney has been running things behind the scenes since the beginning. If he's gone, it will take this WH a bit of time to find another to actually run things because Hastert isn't likely to be as in on what's been happening and able to run such a neferious operation without a break in period.

it's just a cover for something else. Why would the AP start inquiring into the medical records now? Have we had One medical report on Cheney or Bush since they've been re-appointed?? We've had more updates on Clinton's medical well being than the people who are currently in te White House.

32. So hard to respond. It is my nature to wish all in possible health
crisis best wishes to get through the crisis. But Cheney - how hard - he lies to us regularly - and with some bizzarre arrogance that reeks of contempt for the American Public (as in - I will state as truth things that everyone knows - and can be easily proven - are false.) He has not acted in good faith towards the American Public.

Yet still I can not wish him ill. It is against my nature and my belief system to do so. So I wish him and his family well. But if he feels it would be better for his health to resign... well I would completely understand that decision.

Why would I refuse? Because I'm a good person and I just don't know if I would have the fortitude to avoid pushing a large amount of potassium through his IV. A temptation that great would be best avoided.

105. OK. Here is the latest:
UPDATE: Cheney’s Health: What is the White House Hiding?

VAIL -- Why is the White House still insisting that the only health issue Vice President Cheney dealt with today is an old football injury to his knee, visiting renowned orthopedist Dr. Richard Steadman? At the Vail Valley Institute dinner tonight, I kept asking what those in the know here knew. Little by little, here is the story I pieced together: After the Secret Service secured the Vail Valley Medical Center, including the parking lot, the Vice President arrived under his own power and checked in at the orthopedic center under the name “Dr. Hoffman”. He was immediately whisked to the adjacent cardiac unit, suffering from what was described to me as “an angina attack”. The security was so high that a Secret Service agent wouldn’t let an ER nurse out of the bathroom that she had gone into just before the Veep arrived. “Get back in there,” the agent told her. Confounded, she called her husband on her cell phone, telling him “something big” was going on. And indeed it was… but you wouldn’t know it from the White House. It appears that not only doesn’t the public deserve to know what is really going on in Iraq (“last throes”?) we don’t deserve to know what is going on with our Vice President’s health.

117. Because there's no single source
...it's a real, multiple-source story you have to think about to get.

Until it gets announced by the Secret Service, say, MSM is nervous about reporting anything. Get accused of rumor-mongering, spreading panic, aiding the enemy, etc. etc. etc. :eyes:

123. Familiar pattern
The ego/rage/defensive syndrome is followed swiftly by heart trouble. That is why Cheney was so focused on being restrained din his Edwards debate which in essence was a minimal effort/ don't worry everything else is rigged.

But on a real unexpected rant filled with lies and spite you know he is spinning toward an "episode".

Call me despicable, but a real opposition with any real conviction about the evils at stake would have kept up such pressure on the Grand Architect until the pipes burst. Now we heading into a war with Iran, possible economic disaster, rambunctious presidential hopefuls and impeachment evidence.

He always had a respite, the fix and absolute secrecy working for him with Democratic weakness and deference. Horrible damage has been done. Now maybe Cheney is not up to the emotional demands of the assault of implacable truth.

That he consulted an orthopedic surgeon about his knee, and apparently during the exam the surgeon found something indicating an immediate heart problem (irregular heart beat, etc), and sent him to the hospital.

This isn't that unusual if that's what happened.

178. OK DU:ers - here's the scoop on Cheney:
Dick Cheney has had a history of heart problems. He's had I believe 4 heart attacks. About 3 years ago, he had quadruple bypass surgery; for a severe case of blocked arteries.

After the surgery, the doctors found out that Lynne Cheney was feeding her husband a lot of "junk food" like greasy hamburgers, meat with lots of fat, and super high cholesterol foods. So his diet was the culprit. They tried to change his eating habits, but he's resisted. He had a pacemaker installed a few years ago.

In the meantime, Cheney still has a large hole in his aorta which has not healed. The doctors have warned Dick that he should not do anything extreme or exhausting which could rupture his artery. I'm sure doctors watch this man 24/7, to make sure nothing happens to him.

Cheney goes in and out of the hospital on a regular basis. He just went in about 6 months ago in Washington; somebody reported it on another news group.

The barracudas in Washington have wanted to get rid of him, because of his fragile health. But the old buzzard has hung on, insisting that he can do the job. He's been an acknowledged "workaholic" for a long time now.

I wonder how long he'll last. Let's take some bets.

I can almost picture Cheney getting up after the surgery and hearing all the clashing of the missing surgical instruments that the Stooges left in their subject's body (well I can dream it might be Cheney can't I,,,?)

191. Bush Took Charge During Cheney Hospital Visit
http://www.scrappleface.com/MT/archives/001925.html

........ President George Bush told an alarmed White House press corps "constitutionally gentlemen, as of now, I am in charge here."

The announcement quelled rumors that President Reagan's former Secretary of State Alexander Haig had stepped in during Mr. Cheney's absence.

Mr. Bush said his time spent with Mr. Cheney during the past four years has prepared him to lead "if, heaven forbid, it should ever come to that."

While the vice president has a history of heart trouble, spokesman Mary Matalin said tests showed that "this time it's only an ordinary cold, not the kind of cold that Soviet leaders used to get."
