Bird Flu Outbreak in Japan
Bird Flu Outbreak in Japan

Mon 27 Jun 2005

Bird flu has been detected in chickens at a farm in north-eastern Japan, and restrictions have been imposed on shipments of poultry and eggs from the area, the government said yesterday.

More than 800 chickens at a farm in Mitsukaido City in Ibaraki prefecture, just northeast of Tokyo, have died since April, and recent tests on some found they were infected with the H5N2 strain of bird flu, said Hirofumi Kurita, an official at the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry.

1. Hoarie Crawp!
This is the "friendlier" bird flu compared to the H5N1 strain that's spreading people to people now, but still rather alarming since it's the first bird flu in decades for the area.

4. I don't get it
I thought most viruses that affect humans come to us through the bird population. Is it just that this particular virus is more dangerous?

5. Just that it has a very high death rate, that's all.

6. In 1918 to 1919 the Spanish Flu Killed est. 40000000
Globally. What also made it bad is it attack the healthy, young not the old and sickly. Literally some went to bed feeling fine and did not wake up.

7. This is not the most dangerous strain
The Japanese outbreak is H5N2. The dangerous one is H5N1, which is entering the pandemic phase and has been found in various parts of Asia.
