Dems target pre-Iraq war intelligence (DSM) -The Hill
Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 09:42 AM by Rose Siding
Democrats are eyeing several parliamentary maneuvers to prod Congress into investigating the so-called Downing Street memo and other recently disclosed documents that they contend shows that the Bush administration manipulated prewar intelligence to build support for the war in Iraq.

Although any Democratic move will almost certainly fail in the face of vigorous Republican opposition, such maneuvers would constitute the first steps toward filing articles of impeachment, a bold step that some Democrats have left as an open question in recent weeks.
...
But Conyers is reluctant to take such a bold step just yet. “My inclination at this time is not to do something like that,” Conyers said, although he noted that he wanted to press for an investigation in other ways, including sending committee investigators to London.

Conyers and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) are expected to give a special-orders speech on the Downing Street Memo on the floor tonight.

Still, other members may move forward with Conyers. “My sense is other members are following lead for now,” a House Democratic aide said. “However, the groups who are advocating for this may well lose patience with and may seek another member to do this.”

3. What's with the timid approach from the dems?
Barney Frank: "Impeach? I think that’s a mistake, but there are factual questions to be answered."

Conyers: "My inclination at this time is not to do something like that.”

Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.): “I think there ought to be a resolution of inquiry. I wouldn’t do it on my own. I’d want to do it with others and… without any illusions of it going anywhere.”

Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas): “My position is I want to be at a point where the data is overwhelming."

Am I missing something here? Isn't starting a war based on lies right up there toward the top of the list of one of the worst crimes a president could possibly commit? I have a tough time coming up with anything worse. What's the strategy with the timid approach?

6. I think they're playing it right. Not for histrionics, but for a useful
purpose.

It may actually be possible to impeach, but not now. Not until more has come to light, not til the public turns to the point that Puggies in the House would be putting their jobs at risk by supporting the Chimp. Or maybe not until a new Congress is seated in 2007.

It is a terrible strategy to point an unloaded gun at somebody. It is an especially stupid move to point an unloaded gun & pull the trigger.

4. excerpt from the letter I received from my GOP representative
I appreciate you contacting me regarding the charges made in the "Downing Street Memo."

The United States went to war with Iraq to remove a regime that posed a significant threat to the United States. However, America understood that removing this terrorist regime would require a replacement Iraqi regime. The United States can accept no less than a democratic government in Iraq. Until a stable regime that reflects the will of the Iraqi people is instituted, the United States must maintain a military presence in Iraq.

I will provide our troops with everything they need to ensure they safety while completing the mission. Our soldiers deserve our support and I am determined to provide them with every resource they require.

/Sam Graves

HUH? What happened to the WMDs? Isn't "regime change" illegal under International Law?

Suggestions anyone?
