U.S. military says can defeat nuclear-armed N.Korea
http://www.swissinfo.org/sen/swissinfo.html?siteSect=143&sid=5907872&cKey=1120010722000

SEOUL (Reuters) - U.S. and South Korean forces can deter and defeat North Korea regardless of whether the reclusive communist state has one or several nuclear weapons, a senior U.S. military officer said in an interview broadcast on Wednesday.

The commander of the U.S. forces in South Korea, General Leon LaPorte, said that the U.S. military believes North Korea has one to two nuclear weapons at a minimum, and is also working to advance its missile program.

"Whether North Korea has one or several nuclear weapons does not change the balance on the peninsula," LaPorte told South Korea's PBC radio in an interview taped on Tuesday, according to transcript provided by the station.

"The U.S. and the Republic of Korea retain our ability to deter North Korean aggression and, if required, to decisively defeat the North Korean threat if they were to threaten South Korea," he said.

Can't whip a few dead enders in Iraq going on three years now.

1. Freakin' moron. Of course we can defeat Korea with nukes. . .
we can defeat every nation on Earth with nukes. What would distinguish us as a great nation would be if we can avoid using nukes and learn to live with other peoples without having to resort to cheap theatrics and blustering buffoonery.

19. not exactly-
"we can defeat every nation on Earth with nukes..."

no, we can't.

we could probably defeat each nation on Earth, but if every other nation besides us joined together, we'd have our hat handed to us. we'd find a very formidable foe in just a china/russia alliance- and it might even come to that.

4. Rumsfailed's wet dream
Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defence: "What is victory? I say victory is persuading the American people and the rest of the world that this is not a quick matter that will be over in a month or a year or even 5 years. It is something we need to do so that we can continue to live in a world with powerful weapons and with people who are willing to use those powerful weapons. And we can do that. That would be a victory in my opinion." Dec. 2001

That freak of nature wants to use every weapon - especially the "powerful" ones.

6. U.S. can defeat N.K. even if N.K. has several nuclear weapons.
If Seoul or Tokyo (or a U.S. naval task force or two) don't exist after the war is over, that's just too bad for them. PNAC would have slain another vertex in the axis of evil, that's the important thing.

11. General LaPorte is an Idiot
Most of the 2nd ID is in Afghanistan, how the hell is the ROK Army going to deter the North if they come across the border.

Seoul isn't that far from the DMZ, and the North Koreans can be within artillery distance in a matter of a few hours, and that's
with someone standing in their way.

The last time the North came across they pushed both the ROK Army and its US allies all the way down to Pusan. If it hadn't have been
for MacArthur's insane plan there would be no South Korea.

Unfortunately in the current group of boot licking, ass kissing, star wearers there are no MacArthurs, Pattons, Rommels, or Guederians. All that they have now are a bunch of no imagination clowns who can't even beat the remains of a third rate army and some
relgious fanatics.

If the North comes over that border, the only way the US is going to stop them is by using nukes and when they do that, every country in that region will do anything for a ceasefire.

LaPorte sounds like one of those movie generals, the kind that give orders to fight ot the last man and the last bullet, what a dick!!!!!

14. One or two nukes can
decimate the entire area plus. It is insane to even suggest a conventional war against No Korea. China might not stand still for such a hairbrained idea as well. These idiots are really hoping for a third world war. They must have their bunkers all picked out.

18. Yea right... and with how many dead?
An artillery barrage on Seoul, a nuke on Kangnam district, and
a nuke on tokyo would be an opening shot from NK, and that alone would
produce 10-20 million dead. By the end of hostilities, surely that
number would be above 20 million.

This general is a fucking ass, like dejavu from "dr strangelove" where
"80 million dead, tops" was suggested as a reasonable margin of victory
in a nuclear conflict. That is not decisive you stupid general.

23. Defeating N.Korea not the issue
N.Korea is within the Chinese sphere of military hegemony. They beat us the last time and they can beat us again. Any American aggression against N.Korea will be strongly responded to by China.

24. I am not sure vaporizing a country can be declared a victory in any
real sense.

Avoiding conflict, in this case a war that would be certain to destroy hundreds of thousands of lives would be a true victory.
