GAY-RIGHTS BILL Groups claim 57,000 signed ballot initiative
AUGUSTA -- Groups seeking to overturn a new gay-rights law submitted what they said was more than 57,000 signatures Tuesday -- apparently enough to put gay rights before Maine voters once again.

In the frenzied final hours of a signature drive, the Christian Civic League of Maine and the Maine Grassroots Coalition collected 12,000 signatures to reach their goal. The groups had about 90 days to get 50,519 signatures.

...

Wearing white T-shirts promoting marriage as the union of one man and one woman, supporters outside the Capitol clapped, cheered and yelled "praise the Lord" Tuesday as Madore and others talked about how hard it was to gather signatures.

Madore's wife, Susan, called the effort a "miracle."

This law should have gone into effect today. The so-called Christians opposed to this are touting the gay-marriage issue which is specifically NOT addressed in this law. These people are so full of hate it's atrocious. At least a spokesman from another Christian group spoke in support of the law saying his Christian faith taught him that all people are equal.

Mods, I posted this as LBN even though it's a Maine story because it's a major issue. I hope it complies with the rules.
