Only 39% in poll would vote for governor again

John Wildermuth, Chronicle Political Writer

Wednesday, June 29, 2005

The same California voters who gave Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger rave reviews in his victory in the unprecedented 2003 recall election aren't interested in a 2006 sequel by the actor-turned-politician, according to a Field Poll released today.

In a startling reversal of public opinion, 57 percent of the state's registered voters would not support Schwarzenegger's re-election next year, up from 42 percent in a February poll. Those who would vote to return him to Sacramento tumbled from 56 percent to 39 percent.

The governor, who has yet to announce a candidacy that has been taken as a given since his first day in office, finds himself running slightly behind two Democratic challengers, state Treasurer Phil Angelides and state Controller Steve Westly, in head-to-head matchups.

"There's a broad-ranging discontent among voters, with people turning away from the governor,'' said Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll.

10. More people voted No on the recall or Yes, but for someone other than Arn-
old, than voted Yes and for Arnold.

That's why they had to have the recall vote. There's no way Arnold could have won in a straight election.

And it looks like, unlike Bush, incumbancy isn't keeping him competitive. Maybe he should hope that someone blows up the Golden Gate Bridge and then he can blame Mexico and invade them with the national guard.

23. Something you folks dont seem to understand
Is that during the special election less than half the normal precincts were available. Large inner city areas like LA and Oakland were the ones that felt the pinch the most. While Orange County, and the San Juaquin Valley were hardly effected at all. It was just another case of Republican election rigging. If they can dampen the turnout they can even win in California.

27. As one who lives in OC, I agree
I have said this many times. The stranglehold on this county is breathtaking. Remember the bankruptcy in 1994? No one was held accountable. I actually FEAR contacting my Rep. Our Kerry Rally last year drew about 60 people. What really made me mad was that no one from the Loretta Sanchez headquarters endorsed, advertised or showed up for it. President Clinton campaigned for her here (I was there) but she has not once returned the favor.
But voting places are everywhere, never a shortage.

As far as the groper is concerned, it is true, people actually think they now 'know a rock star' personally because they voted for him. Hopefully these poll numbers are right and enough will get him out of my state before he ruins it.

Sorry for the rant.

24. He never had more than about 47% of the vote:
7.96 million = 4.41 (yes) + 3.56 (no) voted on the recall
Of these, AS got 3.74 million

So he started with about 47% = 3.74/7.96. That doesn't sound like a completely star-struck population to me.

2. This ...
.. (the California electorate) is a microcosm of the US. They elected a total unknown based on promises that he could defy the laws of nature (create money out of thin air).

Of course, CA is no better off than they were 3 years ago, perhaps they are worse off. If another politician comes along who will promise a solution to every problem but without costing them a cent, they will vote for him/her too.

Everyone wants something for nothing. Anyone still buying the "waste fraud and abuse" argument as to where their taxes are going, well those people are fucking morons.

3. Americans really are the most clueless people on the face of the earth
aren't we?

These boneheads in California (not that there aren't boneheads all over the US) had stars in their eyes when they elected a fool like Arnold, and now they have buyers remorse.

I have an idea. Recall the bastard.

11. They didn't realize that Enron was raping CA in order to hurt Davis.
They thought it was Davis's fault that the economy was bad. They didn't realize that Enron was pulling a Nixon-Chile-Allende on California.

19. Most didn't--he was shoved down our throats by Enron
GOP created blackouts and high energy prices with deregulation

Blamed the resulting deficit on Gray Davis

Demanded a recall

Then in the quick campaign that followed, got Arnold in.

Ironically, Davis had to get a higher percentage of votes, a majority, than Arnold, who merely had to get the most votes of those running against Davis.

And they have the machines.

31. Sorry- Enron was Clinton's creation
and the so called energy crisis happened on his watch. Bush just inheritied the problem and made it that much worse....

And California's "deregulation?" That came out of a Democratic legislature with overwhelming support among Democrats (even though progressives and Greens warned them time and again what would happen).

It's easy to blame the Republicans for things like that because of course, they'd do it again anywhere they could- but it's important not to forget that Dems are fully capable and prepared to date rape you too, given half the chance.

32. I don't give dems a pass on deregulation
Clinton and the DLC types were way too "business friendly," but Bush had a chance to intervene and ask FERC to cap prices, which he didn't do and they would be unlikely to do since bush appointed Ken Lay's choice to head that regulatory agency.

There should be a way to make this distinction so people know we aren't just giving blind allegiance to the Democratic Party, maybe say GOP and Republican with an asterisk (GOP*) and the asterisk would mean you include corporate whore dems.

when I see denigrating comments from even DUers about California, that I so wish for California to secede from the union. But we have just enough republican influence here to keep that from ever happening.

7. Here's hoping that some other....
state in this god-forsaken joke of a country has to go through what California had to go through in that recall. "I really want to vote for this guy, he's got some great ideas and seems sincere, but I have no choice but to vote for the other guy, only because he's a democrat and seems to be garnering the bulk of the attention, on the slight chance that doing so will prevent the republican from getting elected."

20. California just got bored. But we're not bored now.
I was blown away by the recall, and by Boobengrabber's election. I voted against it, and for Cruz. But -- WHAT?!! I think CA liberals are just a little lazy, hanging out in lefty paradises up and down the state.

Now -- everyone's good and pissed off. Republicans are due for a big fall here, unless they can stock the state with Diebold, which they are definitely trying to do. Screw these traitors. GOP out of CA.

30. Schwarzenegger Loses Some Muscle
Chicago Tribune 6/30

Unpopular moves and the perception that he's just another partisan politician help sour the public's opinion of California's formerly formidable "Governator."

LOS ANGELES - He has aged and has bags under his eyes these days. His wife says she doesn't want him to keep the job. And neither do a vast majority of Californians.

Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger -- the man who rode to the state's highest office on a flood tide of popularity -- is in deep political trouble. A non-partisan poll released Wednesday showed that only 39% of registered voters asked would give the governor another term.
