Election reform commission to hold final hearing

A politically diverse slew of election experts, including a former president and several former congressional leaders, will begin to discuss ways to streamline, secure and ease access to Election Day around the country.

The Carter-Baker Commission — named for its co-chairmen, President Jimmy Carter and ex-Secretary of State James A. Baker III — is to hold its second and final public hearing at Rice University on Thursday.

"The idea is for these commission members to stand above the political arena and think about how do we solve and modify the problems that still exist," commission executive director Robert Pastor said.

The commission — roughly one-third Democrats, one-third Republicans and one-third nonpartisan — first met in April in Washington.

"We've heard what went wrong and what needs to be addressed," said Pastor, who with Carter has organized the monitoring of elections around the world. "The commission is now going to focus on improving the process."
