GOP probes non-destructive (stem) cell research
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/apscience_story.asp?category=1501&slug=Stem%20Cells

By LAURIE KELLMAN
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

WASHINGTON -- Antiabortion Republicans looking for a way to vote for stem cell research are considering putting federal dollars behind unproven technologies for harvesting the all-purpose cells without destroying human embryos.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and other GOP lawmakers are considering legislation drawn from a report in May by President Bush's Council on Bioethics, which studied research that might carry medical promise but is in its infancy.

In some cases, the research is ethically objectionable, the panel wrote. Nonetheless, it said four types of studies "deserve the nation's careful and serious consideration."

Bush was receptive to funding the theoretical approaches rather than medically more-promising research that destroys embryos, three lawmakers who have discussed the subject with him told The Associated Press.

1. This whole thing seems stupid to me
Private concerns and states like California are moving ahead with stem cell research. Other countries are also moving ahead.

Bush stops Federal funding, but not the research itself, and he becomes the hero of the christian right, even though he really has done nothing to actual end the research, just the federal funding of it.

Sometimes I think Rove and Bush just sit around and laugh at the gullibility of their base.

4. And they are playing games with my life too.
I refuse to call the embryos lovers christian for keeping in pain to justify their moral high ground. And yes am painting everyone with a "broad bush" that is against stem cell research. Unless you can ethically allow me to suffer for your beliefs.

6. I find it incredible anyone would be against this research
They say that this is more important than a living human being in need of medical care to live.

2. They just throw the cells away
Really I think the exact date is sixteen days after use although I could be mistaken on the exact time limit. Now if people are against stem cell let me throw this into the mix. We are all made up of carbon atoms do we stop using carbon paper, wearring diamond rings, and burning coal because they are one step removed?
I have young onset parkinsons disease and I believe that no ones religion government or belief system has the right to torture me every day.

3. I hope these right wing hateful fundy retards get ALZHEIMER'S
I would give anything to see them remove their diapers at the NURSING/DEMENTIA HOME dinner table.

And examine their loose stools with their BARE HANDS in front of their contemporaries.

5. One thing these ignorant pieces of sanctimonious garbage
don't quite GET is that the CELLS aren't killed at all. Their DNA is replaced, and instead of being flushed from a womb by "god," they will live on as a cure for a desperately ill person. I say "flushed," because that is what happens to most groups of cells that are insterted into a woman's womb. The success rate for in vitro is not all that encouraging.

Either that, or they'll get thrown out with the garbage.

That's the choice, prolifers. Educate your prissy selves about what stem cells are and how they are manipulated for use. Learn that the choice is life as a cure or death by failure to implant or destruction by a lab at the request of the people from whose tissue they were created, the would be parents.

10. GOP Backs Non-Destructive Cell Research
By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer
6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Embryonic stem cell research that doesn't destroy budding human life? Right now, it's possible only in theory, or on animals. But those alternatives to the most promising stem cell science are enough to win the attention of anti-abortion Republicans and President Bush.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and other GOP lawmakers are considering legislation drawn from a report in May by Bush's Council on Bioethics, which studied research that might carry medical promise but is in its infancy.

In some cases, the research is ethically objectionable, the panel wrote. Nonetheless, it said four types of studies "deserve the nation's careful and serious consideration."

12. Of course these same people support testing toxic chemicals
on human beings- including neonates and children!

Think I'm kidding you? Think again.
