Pentagon defends, lawmakers praise 'world class' Guantanamo prison
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US military official tasked with running the Guantanamo Bay detention camp rejected calls by critics to close the facility, saying it continues to yield vital "actionable intelligence" in the US-led war on terror.

~snip~

"The rule of thumb for the guards is that you will not touch the Koran, and that's the bottom line. If there's an instance where a guard need to handle a Koran ... a guard will don a cream-colored latex glove, will secure the Koran in two hands," said Command Sergeant Major Anthony Mendez.

And Hood added that far from torturing prisoners, ice cream and candy bars are sometimes used to induce them to give up information, as "part of a rapport-building effort on the part of interrogators."

~snip~

But the committee's top Democrat, Ike Skelton, said the future of the facility should still be reviewed, if only to combat "those who would recruit terrorists to fight against us and by people throughout the Muslim world," he said.

"We must not provide this recruiting tool for those who would fight us. This means credible, independent investigations of any allegations," Skelton said.

OMG...now we're giving them ice-cream. That proves it, torture and abuse never happened at Gitmo. :sarcasm:

1. "ice cream & candy bars are sometimes used to induce" new torture method?
"sometimes used to induce them to give up information" can mean other things in english than "i gave him some candy and icecream".
maybe its my twisted mind but i can almost picture the DOD memo authorising icecream-based torture...

4. Give me a brake. This is crazy. Do they have a brain between them?
It is like the GOP saying we should not be upset about the deaths in Iraq after all look how many people die on the road every day in this country. It is stuff like that that makes you sure they are all nuts. I do not know why we do not have slaves any more. After all they lived on large country estates and could grew their own food and were giving something to wear plus a free ride over here.

Guantanamo chief: Inmates still useful

Top US officials have consistently defended the prison

Suspects imprisoned at the US Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who have been silent for up to two years are now providing information about al-Qaida, the US general in charge of the prison has said.

"In some cases, detainees under our control for as long as two years, who had resisted talking to us and refused to communicate any relevant information, have over the last six months elected to begin to talk with us about where they were and what their activities were," Brigadier-General Jay Hood told the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday.

He is commander of the joint task force overseeing operations at Guantanamo.

The Pentagon often says that useful information in the fight against "terrorism" continues to be gleaned from the 520 detainees held at the prison on the US military base even though most of those held have not been on the battlefield in several years.

Military officials have been trying to prove the prison remains relevant in the face of increasing calls for it to close.

10. It's just like Dairy Queen
Ice cream and candy bars, yum, yum. With all the hoopla about the 144 torture photos to be released today or tomorrow, I certainly hope people don't forget the ice cream and candy bars.

11. How can we expect the American people to be outraged when Congress is
Edited on Thu Jun-30-05 01:23 PM by Solly Mack
so willing to be lied to? (some -too many- in Congress)

What does it serve America to embrace the lies as truth? How is better if Americans never know the truth?

It doesn't "save" America. It's not in America's best interest to hide the truth.

12. Who is protected?
The guilty, of course.

Unless they think they know better than we do-- average American citizens-- what's good for us.

If there's nothing to hide then come clean. If there's no torture, open the place up!
