US hawk (Bolton – Dep Und Sec of State)warns Iran threat must be eliminated

Richard Norton-Taylor Friday October 10, 2003 The Guardian

snip>Iran "will try and throw sand in our eyes" mixing cooperation and obfuscation "to conceal as much as they can, to delay and to avoid having the issue referred to the security council," said Mr Bolton.

<snip>He said North Korea was being dealt with by multilateral talks conducted by China, and that Pakistan had denied trading in nuclear materials with North Korea. "We take them at their word," he said. Asked about Israel's nuclear weapons capability, he replied: "The issue for the US is what poses a threat to the US."

On Iraq, Mr Bolton said "the purpose of military action was to eliminate the regime ... The real security risk was the regime". He implied it was not weapons of mass destruction that was the issue but whose hands they were in. Mr Bolton described the "level of cooperation" from Syria - which Washington accuses of manufacturing chemical weapons and harbouring terrorists - as "not satisfactory".
<snip>

Mr Bolton was in London for meetings on US plans to intercept ships and aircraft suspected of trafficking weapons of mass destruction.

24. Julie, you just nailed it!
The world knows where we are vulnerable: the petro-dollar.

Without fiat oil currency, we will not be able to wage wars, especially endless ones, through dumping cartloads of cash on the world market and increase deficits in boondoggle military spending. We will be lucky to have the cash to pave our highways if we extrapolate the fiscal and diplomatic irresponsibility to their final exponents.

The world knows this and the world's leaders seem pretty fucking fed up with Junior condemning every state that does not heel to his every whim. Other nations may not be able to whip us in a face-to-face war. But they can surely bankrupt us so that we will not be able to afford to fight one again.

6. Bolton is perhaps one of the most dangerous fascist/fundie PNAC'ers
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 10:32 AM by Flying_Pig
around. This is a guy who Jessie Helms said he'd like to have standing next to him when the "fight for Armageddon starts".

Full steam ahead!! PNAC's plan for conquest and the subjugation of the Middle East cannot be stopped unless these people are removed from power. Aided and abetted by Israel's Sharon, and his fascist Likud party, along with their American allies in AIPAC, JINSA, and our own Congress (and this includes a number of Democrats!), they are readying plans to invade Iran, Syria, and Lebanon. Israel will provide a continuation of the wars Bush so desperately needs to retain his grasp on the office.

The part that pisses me off badly, is that there is a large group of Democrats that are supporting this. Don't they realize they are supporting Bush and PNAC too, when they cast their pro-Israeli votes? If Bush manages to stay in power, it will have been done with their help! Fucking traitors, ...all!

:grr:

18. Exactly. You don't have to like Clark, but his message is spot on.
In last night's debate, Clark insisted that the Bush Administration's foreign policy has caused North Korea and Iran to ramp up their nuclear programs. He didn't get any press for this statement, let alone many kudos from DUers, but the message is clear, important, and winning.

We need to seize this issue, regardless of our fave candidate. We have to stop this runaway train now. It's important for Dems to get the message to voters that we are less safe now than on September 10, 2001.

25. I'm liking him a bit more
I find what he did in Serbia inexcusable.

However, his brains and especially his sensible warning about our maniacal militarism - however weirdly ironic it is for him to hold this position - are appealing.

Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 10:44 AM by FlashHarry
Nice.

<snip>
In an interview last year with The New York Times, he was asked about conflicting signals from the administration on North Korea. He strode over to a bookshelf, pulled off a volume and slapped it on the table. It was called "The End of North Korea," by an American Enterprise Institute colleague.
.
"That," he said, "is our policy."

8. This is one scary interview - "war" like stops of boats/ships/planes - and

Pre-emptive regime change suggested for Syria, Iran - and perhaps North Korea.

In the PRINCE - the leader is advised that the common folk need not like you - they need only to fear you - and that appears to be the path Bush has chosen.

Of course Machiavellian thought got the author of the Prince dropped from being number two in control of the state, and he ended up betrayed and in prison. One can only hope

11. North Korea has no oil, therefore it's okay if
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 11:00 AM by liberalhistorian
it's dealt with by "multilateral talks." Iran and Syria and Jordan and Libya and all of the other MidEast countries, on the other hand, have tons of oil that belongs to Texas oil companies by birthright, and therefore let's nuke their ass and take their gas! Except for Saudi Arabia, of course, which is our "friend."

Of course, since Bolton's so gung-ho for endless war with MidEast countries (except Saudi Arabia), naturally he'll be the first to march his own sons and/or daughters, if he has any, to their local military recruiting office and sign them right up for immediate training and service in the Mideast, right? Right?

22. North Korea Calls Bolton "Human Scum"
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 09:01 PM by guajira
Bolton is also the idiot who spoke to the Heritage Foundation a few days before Carter's trip to Cuba, telling them that Cuba had bio-weapons. No one at the State Dept. would back up his claims!

snippet:
Armitage spoke at a media conference in Canberra. He said the Beijing talks are designed encourage North Korea to abandon its nuclear programme. While Bolton’s views may be supported by many in the Bush Administration, Armitage said he would not be scheduled to take part in the meetings. North Korea earlier today branded Bolton “as human scum” and declared that Pyongyang would not deal with him.

“It is the greatest shame of the U.S. that Bolton who is like the fascist bereft of elementary moral sense and courtesy as a diplomat and possessed of the disposition of tyrant taking every opportunity to bite at the counterpart is employed as the U.S. Undersecretary of State.

“If such a fascist who makes it his business to make a malignant personal attack even on other's top leader, without reason and captive to habitual negation, represents the U.S. policy, not only this policy but also the administration itself will meet a wretched end.”
