U.S. Soldiers Lured Into Ambush by Iraqi Civilians, Says U.S. Official
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/business/World/iraq031010.html

B A G H D A D, Iraq, Oct. 10— U.S. soldiers were lured into a deadly ambush during a routine patrol in a restive Baghdad neighborhood in what could be a new attack tactic, said a U.S. military official today.

Two U.S. soldiers were killed and four others were wounded during the ambush in the impoverished Sadr City district of Baghdad, U.S. military and hospital officials said today. At least seven Iraqis were also injured in the attack.

U.S. troops in three Humvees were on a routine patrol in Sadr City on Thursday night when they were lured into the ambush, U.S. Army spokesman Lt. Col. George Krivo told reporters in Baghdad.

"A group of people, civilians, met with U.S. forces and said, `Please come in, we need to show you something important,"' said Krivo.

But when the troops left their vehicles and followed the Iraqis into the densely populated slum, they came under fire from rocket-propelled grenades, small arms and makeshift explosives, said Krivo.

1. How can this get anything but worse?
Edited on Fri Oct-10-03 11:18 AM by Dhalgren
Of all the Democratic candidates, the only two that I know of who have said unequivocally that they are in favor of pulling out US forces are Kucinich and Sharpton. I am finding it more and more difficult to support any candidate - at any time - who is not for immediate US withdrawl from Iraq.
If you think we should stay there for any reason, then you won't get my vote.

12. Too Late
Unfortunately, thanks to Bush's irresponsibility, its way too late to pull the troops out. IF we did so, there would be utter chaos in Iraq and the Middle East, and then our national interests really would be threatened by what is going on in Iraq.

Bush will go down in history as the mad man who invaded Iraq.

2. Time to crack down with more pre-emptive massacres of Iraqi civilians

That will also help Americans to obey the regime's new decree to be upbeat on Iraq.

More kills will mean more optimism on the part of the voting class.

3. Jesus...
The Germans in WWII discovered that to ensure security in rear areas on the Russian front, you needed at least a three to one advantage in order to suppress partisan activities.

Shenseki was right- Bush* and Rummy are dickheads who don't know what the fuck they're doing.

4. Are you happy, Mr. President?
You lied to get this nation into an unnecessary war. You have put our troops into a living hell, and many are dying because of your lies. There were no WMD in Iraq and you knew it. At the least, you knew the UN inspectors were doing their job. Your actions demonstrate your lack of concern for our troops. Your actions have reduced, not increased, our national security. The people are not as stupid as you think, Mr. President. You will pay for your crimes.

5. On Frontline last night there was a segment about soldiers
who pulled over a car full of looters. The Iraqi's had wood tied on top of their car. The smug self-righteous soldiers mocked them and drove their tank over the car a few times smashing it to bits. The owner of the car said he was a taxi driver and that was his livelihood.

What I don't understand is why the soldiers did nothing to protect the banks, museums, schools and hospitals from being looted, yet find it appropriate to take this vigilante action on some men taking wood out of a building. Where are their priorities?

10. The admin. underestimated the looting
They did not anticipate such complete and widespread looting something like 17 of 22 ministries were trashed, gutted and burned. The scene you saw last night was Bremers new get tough policy on looters. Those tankers looked like they were venting some frustration, why they emptied their sidearms into the vehicle before they crushed it I dont know. And i didnt notice if they had taken the looted materials out of the car before they crushed it.

its like that quote from Vietnam, they had to destroy the city in order to save it.

14. Actually the Reagan guy on Frontline said they should have
anticipated widespread looting as it always happens. He cited Panama, Grenada and every other action we have been in recently. There is no excuse for them not having prepartions for protecting the city after an invasion.

The looted material was the wood on top of the car. These guys were targets of rage from American soldiers. This kind of action is over the top. They allowed the people to steal priceless antiquities and now they're spending bullets and time to flatten a little car with 2x4's on top??

6. Thanks for the link Don, maybe you'd know this
I cant keep track of who screwed up the post-war Iraq situation. Did you see frontline last night? Was it the Defense Dept or the State dept? Does this have something to do with why Rummy was cut out of the picture recently?

Whose idea was it to get rid of all the Baath party officials? It is thought that they are now organizing these "revenge attacks". That was Bremer's idea, right?

9. I heard Bremer announce the removal of Baathists on Frontline
show last night. I think it was the Chalabi group of people who came up with the idea. I think it is making matters worse. I heard a banker on NPR last week that had worked for 30 years in his bank. Because he is one of the 30,000 who had an affiliation with the Baath party, he is fired. Where will he go, what will he do since he is not allowed to work.

30,000 new recruits to wage guerrilla war on our soldiers.

8. my friend just talked
to a friend of hers that just got back from bagdad. he`s back on a medical and said he`s never going back...it`s constant fear of death-24hrs a day,and there`s no rest because he`s become afraid of his fellow comrades.people are going "insane" over there-the heat, lack of water, and the realization there`s no going home for months. suicides are unreported and buried from the press. it`s the destrution of the united states army. don`t we all feel safer...

15. More Bremer idiocy
"I don't know if they'll want to have American troops here after they're sovereign or not," he said. "My guess is they probably will."

Totally ignoring the public statements of Shite leadership.
