Vatican, Catholics Dismayed Pope Misses Nobel Again

The decision not to give the Nobel Peace Prize to Pope John Paul (news - web sites) has disappointed Vatican (news - web sites) officials and Catholics, who felt the ailing pontiff deserved it and may not live to get another chance.

"The pope is sick exactly because of the pain that wars caused him so he should have won the Nobel Peace Prize," said Anna, an elderly Italian, after visiting the Vatican on Friday.

Some observers said the pope may have been overlooked for the prize despite his strong peace credentials because of his views on abortion, birth control and homosexuality.

"Sometimes the Church does not accept people's opinions, and that is a problem with respect to the prize," said Martin Kluge, a German student visiting the Vatican.

Asked about this view, one Vatican official said: "I thought this was a peace prize and not a prize in sexual ethics."

where a reporter asked a woman at a public health clinic if she was worried about what the Church would say/do if it knew she was getting birth control...This woman looked at the camera and said...

"I don't see the Pope helping me feed the children I already have"....

When the pope told * not to go to Iraq because he'd be going without God, he was hailed, his holiness. Now he is sick and dying and being ridiculed.

I think the pope has a lot of guts as we are seeing up until the end. Any MAN that would actually go to * and tell him he is spiritually screwed still gets a :thumbsup: in my book!

I fail to see it. The general attitude here seems to be, "damn right, he's too wrong about X, Y, Z, he shouldn't get the prize." Respectful actually.

ABout the war thing: people are not one-dimensional.

and you will read the riducule on the DU. I am not against the pope in any way whatsoever. He is a very old man and to think that he had been the object of much criticism as well as riducule I find rather offensive. I do not wish him death.

I do not agree with many of his very old and archaeic staunch viewpoints but when it came down to the brass tacks, this guy is the one that had the balls to go to * and tell him how very wrong he is.

We now see that the pope was right. He deserves the nobel prize! Think how this would have been a slap in the face to *! :evilgrin:

He is Christ's representative on earth to catholics... so in essence peacekeeping is a natural part of the job.

Personally I doubt he cares...about not winning....

And you don't see me kvetching about not getting the Nobel. And I could use the money, too!

Yes, JP II and his men have done real work in ending war at the macro level, but his heartlessness in adhering to a dogma that isn't even 150 years old which actively hurts Catholics (and non-Catholics who live in Church-influenced nations) is wrong. If Jesus was recorded as saying that BC was wrong, the Pope would have a leg to stand on, but He was silent on the issue.

I do appreciate his peace work. Pity that much of his agenda is fundamentally damaging to people.

if he had gone to Baghdad to stay for a couple of weeks right before, or just after the bombing started. That would have been courageous and meaningful.
