ACLU challenges 'speak no Wal-Mart' policy

July 8, 2005

YELM, Wash. --The town council barred residents from mentioning
Wal-Mart at meetings, prompting a challenge by civil libertarians who
said a "free and accountable" government depends on a citizen's
ability to voice concerns openly.

The retailing giant has an application pending to build a superstore,
spurring controversy in the small town about 15 miles southeast of
Olympia.

In a letter to the council, American Civil Liberties Union lawyer
Aaron H. Caplan said his group believes it is unconstitutional to
ban any mention of Wal-Mart at council meetings. The term "big-box
stores" also is banned, as is "moratorium."

The ban began because council members were fed up with complaints
about the proposed superstore and related demands for a moratorium on
big-box stores, municipal attorney Brent Dille said. He said
officials also didn't want to appear biased if the council ever
hears appeals in the matter.

1. Sounds like a no-brainer...a clear free-speech
violation in my book. If the people don't speak up, how can they keep Walmart from destroying their community?

4. Read it a little more closely.
The ACLU is fighting the ban on using the words, not supporting it.

5. OH! So now if they don't want to hear you disagree, they ban
the subject????? What in the World is up with that? Gees, it sounds like they've been taking lessons from Shrub!

7. If you're on a board,
it's too bad if you're fed up with complaints. That's why you exist - to hear them. I've been on several, and have to be at school board meetings twice a month, and I've never heard of "banning" a word or a topic. Stupid.

10. Yelm has always
made me a little itchy. Maybe it's because of J.Z. Knight's (Ramtha's) compound down there. They can tolerate a crackpot "channeler" but they can't handle straight talk from their citizens?

Weird people.

He graduated from Yelm HS in 1987. He was a year ahead of me.

And, yes, Yelm is pretty weird.

on edit: Oh, shit! I'm in the 700 Club! Woe is me!

21. Oh...
Yeah, that makes a difference.

I went through them in about three days. LOL

I'm a pretty prolific poster, though. Even though I SHOULD be working on my current novel.

Bad me!

14. I dated a person who was into Ramtha and Wicca
Complete and utter fruitbat.

Valerie, if you're reading this, call me! Mee-ow!

15. Wicca is one thing...
Ramtha quite another...in my estimation.

I really distrust any of that charismatic crap.

At least Jane Roberts (who kinda started the whole "channeling" thing) didn't set herself up as some sort of cult leader.

16. She was a Wiccan who moved to Yelm from SLC to hear Ramtha
she was a complete fruitbat, like I said, but really cute and she ran the local scuba shop.

We dated for a few months until she tried to get me to partake in a Wiccan "wine ceremony" where the participants first have to chug a glass of wine.

I'm Catholic, pretty faithful, but I am not averse to experiencing other religions. I think the "chug a glass of wine to start the ceremony" struck me as being "off". Look, I'm easy (if you know what I mean) and I enjoy wine, if she wanted to bed me, all she had to do was ask!

LOL

17. Oh....
Uh...I know a LOT of wiccans...she's was a fruitbat all right. Even those rituals that involve wine usually involve SHARING a glass of wine (I've seen a couple such).

And most wiccans--particularly traditionalists--wouldn't give "ramtha" the time of day.

20. "Craftian" Wiccan
perhaps. Eventually she'll either wise up and find her true path (whether Wiccan or something else) or she'll lose herself in someone's charismatic nonsense.

I respecting seeking, but it always turns me off when I see people latching on to that sort of stuff. The very minute someone introduced me to Ramtha (through a video) I just kinda rolled my eyes and walked away. I was only nineteen or so, but firmly convinced that my spiritual B.S. detector was in pretty good shape.
