Call for end to gay priest 'obsession' (Independent UK)

One of the most senior figures in the Anglican Church has told fellow bishops to end their obsession with gay priests and start behaving more like Christians.

Speaking on the eve of a crisis summit in London, called to stave off the threat of a breakaway church, the Archbishop of Cape Town and Primate of Southern Africa spoke out against hardline opponents of homosexuality.

The Most Reverend Winston Njongonkulu Ndungane described the issue as a dangerous distraction from the HIV pandemic and warfare in Africa and the Middle East. Religious hang-ups about sexual issues, he said, are allowing thousands of unnecessary deaths from Aids.

because a lot of the more conservative bishops
opposed to the new gay bishop are from Africa.

It grieves me no end to see a group of conservative bishops and priests use this as a wedge to fragment the church. For some reason sexuality (or the fear of sexuality) has replaced Christ as the focus of their faith.

I've always strongly maintained that the term "Conservative Christian" is an oxymoron.

remember that's where Bishop Tutu was bishop and South Africa has anti-discrimination language in its constitution

I didn't expect any help from the 3rd world bishops. For this man to speak up is enormous.
