(Indiana) Clerk: Plan for election won't work
Democrats level new charges

Marion County's top election official said Friday it will be impossible to hold the Nov. 4 election on time unless a new voting method is used.

County Clerk Doris Anne Sadler said the Election Board must delay voting until Nov. 20 or use paper ballots -- requiring workers to count tens of thousands of votes by hand -- to comply with a court order dictating that the ballot be redesigned. Democrats challenged the ballot as illegal last month. "It can't be done," said Sadler, a Republican, referring to running the election as originally planned with a high-tech optical-scan system. "It's physically impossible."

The announcement set off a maelstrom of political charges that culminated with Democratic Mayor Bart Peterson's campaign manager, Michael O'Connor, accusing Sadler of either "lying or being incompetent" and another top Democrat suggesting she be held in contempt of court.

"If the clerk has to conduct it from the jail cell, this election will go on," said Marion County Democratic Party Chairman Ed Treacy.

1. She's an idiot
The workers won't be counting thousands of ballots!!!

Ballots can and should be counted in the individual precincts and then report the results to the Election Board.

Total precincts in 2003 Primary election - 914
Total voters in 2000 General election - 550,615
<2000 had more voters than 2002>
Average voters per precinct - 602

Gee how long would it take to count 600 votes???

Fast counting is not as important as accurate counting.

Election results were not always reported the same night or even a few days later. Even Presidential elections were held within 2 to 4 month period.

2. Make them use paper
Cheaper and more accurate. I am living proof that paper ballots work. I have counted paper ballots, and yes, it takes about an hour.

And no one has ever made us recount those votes, because the count is accurate.

3. It can't be done," said Sadler -- WHY NOT
because the optical scan machines had already been set up to rig the election with her funky ballot design that the court has invalidated?
