Bush Passes on Public Endorsement of Rove
By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON -- President Bush passed up a chance Wednesday to express confidence in senior aide Karl Rove in a political fight over a news leak that exposed a CIA officer's identity. The lack of endorsement surprised some White House officials who had been told Bush would back his embattled friend.

Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin, later asserted that Rove had "cooperated fully" in the federal investigation, had done nothing wrong and was prepared to provide additional information to a special prosecutor if needed.

"This is a serious investigation," Bush told reporters after a Cabinet meeting, with Rove sitting just behind him. "And it is very important for people not to prejudge the investigation based on media reports."...

***

Bush said he would not discuss the matter further until a criminal investigation is finished....

***

The failure by Bush to publicly back Rove left some White House advisers privately wondering whether the president was distancing himself from his longtime adviser....

2. If Rove is convicted, he will then be kicked out of the house
Edited on Wed Jul-13-05 08:55 PM by Tiggeroshii
until then, he's jsut as innocent as anybody else, and I'm sure the White House has their fingers crossed the prosecutor keeps him that way. As the idea of conviction nears, the idea of dumping Rove may be a more politically saavy choice. Not dumping him in the days Rove is centered in a criminal prosecution would bring the White House more deeply into the scandal and spur questions that led to watergate:

"What did the President know and when did he know it?"

3. Rove has a history of nasty & illegal actions to protect W
He smeared Ann Richards, his treatment of John McCain and his family was ruthless and slanderous, and he's still at it.

Maybe he finally crossed the line with out a CIA operative.

and does add the interesting information that some WH officials were told that Bush would, in fact, endorse Rove, and were then surprised that he did not. I agree that interpreting this as "distancing," as some at the WH are reported doing, is speculative.

21. The LA Times was reading it right, per reporters' questions of Scotty.
A reporter asked Scotty specifically if bush had confidence in Rove, and Scotty danced around it, saying that the White House has confidence in all its people and that bush answered the question asked of him.

The reporter then retorted that bush didn't stick to questions in the past, so why was he not answering beyond the question today?

I'm paraphrasing. In short, they were mocking Scotty protecting bush who is protecting his own a**.

17. Still trying to figure out how...
...they are handling this internally. Anyone in the know understands Rove's overall importance in this administration. He won't see anything resembling jail time, as amusing as that sounds. He'll most likely skate on a technicality, claim it is high time he 'spends more time with the family', and slots in to some highly paid think tank job. His role of keeping this administration in power for two terms to ensure the SCOTUS appointments has been completed, his legislative agenda is more than half done for the credit and energy industries, and he is liked less by Poppy than even Junior is.

Meanwhile, Tom Delay is dancing around lighting his Cuban Cigars with copies of the Downing Street Minutes and giggling like a school girl as another MSM red herring is fished in.

(Scarecrow)
I could wile away the hours
Conferrin' with the flowers
Consultin' with the rain
And my head I'd be scratchin'
While my thoughts were busy hatchin'
If I only had a brain

I'd unravel any riddle
For any individ'le
In trouble or in pain

(Dorothy)
With the thoughts you'd be thinkin'
You could be another Lincoln
If you only had a brain

(Scarecrow)
Oh, I would tell you why
The ocean's near the shore
I could think of things I never thunk before
And then I'd sit and think some more

I would not be just a nuffin'
My head all full of stuffin'
My heart all full of pain
I would dance and be merry
Life would be a ding-a-derry
If I only had a brain

43. I agree - there are some things you don't dignify with a response
Rove is beneath contempt and only weasels will rally to his defense.

Were I a judge on a tribunal hearing this case I would find the duty onerous and distasteful,

Hopefully the court really IS a machine that follows the law.

34. Bush backs away from backing Rove
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/ny-usleak144342791jul14,0,927982.story?coll=ny-uspolitics-headlines

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

July 14, 2005

WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush passed up a chance yesterday to express confidence in senior aide Karl Rove in a political fight over a news leak that exposed a CIA officer's identity. The lack of endorsement surprised some White House officials who had been told Bush would back his embattled friend.

Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin, later asserted that Rove had "cooperated fully" in the federal investigation of the leak, had done nothing wrong and was prepared to provide additional information to a special prosecutor if needed.

Bush, speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting with Rove sitting behind him, said, "This is a serious investigation. And it is very important for people not to prejudge the investigation based on media reports."

Later in the day, White House spokesman Scott McClellan insisted that Rove did have Bush's support. "As I indicated yesterday, every person who works here at the White House, including Karl Rove, has the confidence of the president," McClellan said.

37. Yes but Rove was clearly visable in back of Bush in all of photo-ops
If Bush was really trying to disassociate from Rove, he would not have been so clearly in view sitting just behind him during the press conference. If we see Rove disappear from future photo-ops however, or in places where he is traditionally with Bush then we can really begin to wonder what's going on. We can only watch and wait (and hope).
