(San Jose) police explode suspicious suitcase near downtown

By Dan Stober
Mercury News

When Sarah Langton found the metal suitcase abandoned on the sidewalk outside her San Jose thrift shop and military museum Wednesday afternoon, her first instinct was to open it.

But ``times being what they are,'' she thought twice and called the police. The first officer on the scene looked at the suitcase and decided not to open it, either.

... As curious neighbors watched from a distance, the bomb squad sent a remote-controlled robot rolling down the street to take a look at the suitcase, which was sitting by the curb near a small tree. The robot leaned close and fired a water bullet at the case to disrupt any bomb that might be inside.

... It was empty, said police Lt. Chris Moore.

Neither the police nor the neighbors seemed surprised by the anti-climatic outcome. ``A terrorist bombing a thrift shop?'' shrugged one skeptical onlooker.

2. Something I have been tempted to do
Leave a locked suitcase full of glitter and confetti at an airport.

When they blow it up on the tarmac HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

5. Yeah, that is not funny
I'm getting a little nervous myself. The Union Station in LA was closed just this morning for a few hours because of an abandoned backpack. No jokes, please.
