Democrats Again See Little Choice on Iraq
WASHINGTON -- Like dozens of other Democrats who supported going to war in Iraq, Rep. Marty Meehan of Massachusetts is frustrated with the results.

A year after the pro-war vote in Congress, no weapons of mass destruction have been found. Postwar planning, he says, has been botched. President Bush is making little headway in winning a new U.N. resolution to provide fresh troops and money for Iraq.

Now Bush is asking Congress to vote again on Iraq, this time approving $87 billion for military operations and reconstruction there and in Afghanistan.

Yet, whatever misgivings they might have about last year's vote, Meehan and fellow Democrats may have little choice but to support Bush's request.

2. The Dems always give in,
they always get burned, and they still keep doing it. What I really don't understand is that they should have known that this administration would be liars in the first place. After all, it's filled with criminals -- some of them convicted.

3. End this now, vote NO!
If they vote "Yes" they will be opening the door to future requests for money in which the Bush regime, as the Johnson and Nixon Administration before them, will use one or more of the following tried-and-true excuses to keep US troops in Iraq:

1. We can't leave now after all the sacrifices and commitments (the "we broke it, we fix it" excuse).

2. As the leader of the Free World, America must keep her commitments (the "peace with honor" excuse).

3. The media is not reporting the many stories of success we are having in Iraq, here is the laundry list... (the "light at the end of the tunnel" excuse).

4. If you don't vote for this you will be abandoning our troops in the midst of battle (the "to oppose the war is to oppose the troops" excuse).

5. Democrats have "little choice?"
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 06:47 AM by teryang
WTF? Maybe they should read the Constitution. They always have a choice. VOTE NO.

Leahy is wrong on this one. It's going to be worse in Iraq as long as our troops are there. If they want to appropriate 15 billion for reconstruction and aid they can still do that while pulling the troops out and making arrangements with the UN to give up the occupation in Iraq. I'd give the junta 60 days of funding to get out of Iraq.

7. Do it, but use the tax cut money to pay for it.
Edited on Mon Oct-13-03 07:00 AM by camero
They should put an amendment in the bill that if Bush needs more money to rebuild Iraq, it should come at the expense of the tax cuts on the wealthy and they cannot borrow more money to pay for it.

Edit: Message to the wealthy and Bush fundraisers: You break it, you bought it.
