Bush Wants Roberts in Place by Next Term

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush on Wednesday pressured lawmakers to get Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts in place by the start of the high court's next term as the Senate began a confirmation battle that both sides expect to center on abortion.

``I urge the Senate to rise to the occasion, provide a fair and civil process and to have Judge Roberts in place before the next court sessions begins on October the third,'' Bush said during a visit to the port of Baltimore to tout his homeland security efforts.

Before he took a helicopter ride to Maryland, Bush and his nominee had breakfast at the White House. Then Roberts headed to Capitol Hill for meetings with leaders in the Senate, which will decide whether he will replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

``We will push the process forward,'' Bush said earlier, appearing with Roberts at his side on steps outside the Oval Office.

1. He's said that all along, and I'm sure O'Connor wants that too.
I think there's enough time for Senate hearings to be held and a vote to confirm or deny by Oct. 1st.

2. However, O'Connor said...
she would stay on until there is a replacement, so there is no "open seat" pressure on the Democrats.

10. Of course, but if you believe the reason she retired, she doesn't
want to leave her husband and come back to Wash. in Oct. either.

3. Request denied.
Filibuster will continue through November of 2006 where Roberts is unceremoinously dumped by Republicans because they can't break the cloture as it's increased one by one, and they suddenly lost a huge majority, and find themselve in a very serious minority where they don't have the votes to sustain a filibuster.

7. Typical entitlement mentality of the rich kid
Ever notice how this guy acts like an overindulged little child whenever he doesn't get what he wants.

He should shut his mouth. He can appoint whoever he wants, but now it is in the hands of the Senate.
