Lugar Among Roberts' Donation Recipients

WASHINGTON - Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts has donated to the political campaigns of several Republican candidates, including one senator who will vote on Roberts' appointment to the high court.

In recent election years, Roberts has contributed more than $3,700 to Republican candidates, including $1,000 to George W. Bush's successful bid for the presidency in 2000.

Roberts, who grew up in Indiana, gave $500 to the 2000 re-election bid of Sen. Richard Lugar (news, bio, voting record), R-Ind., according to campaign contribution reports.

He also contributed $1,235 to the 1998 campaign of Republican Peter Fitzgerald, who defeated Illinois Sen.
Carol Moseley Braun, a Democrat. Fitzgerald only served one term. Roberts gave $250 to Peter Rusthoven, a Republican who failed to gain the GOP nomination against Sen. Evan Bayh (news, bio, voting record), D-Ind., in 1998.

Odd that they make no mention of Roberts' contributions of $1000 to the Bush Campaign and another $1000 for the Bush Recount Team in the 2000 election.

Supreme Court pick has won major cases for Toyota, Fox

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - In selecting John Roberts as his Supreme Court nominee, President Bush appears to have found a candidate that will please business interests.

Roberts, 50, practiced telecommunications, energy and other business law at Hogan & Hartson, the prestigious Washington law firm, from 1986 to 1989 and again from 1993 to 2003.

He won a Supreme Court case for Toyota (TM: news, chart, profile) in 2002, after an assembly line worker developed carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis in her neck and arms. She sued the company but the court ruled her injuries weren't covered by the Americans With Disabilities Act.

The decision won praise from business leaders, who argued too many borderline lawsuits are filed by people not entitled to ADA coverage.

Roberts also represented Fox Television (FOX: news, chart, profile) (NWS: news, chart, profile) in its successful challenge to the federal government's broadcast ownership rules, and served as counsel for the Associated General Contractors of America when the group argued unsuccessfully against an affirmative action program.

"He has an understanding of the impact of regulation and litigation on businesses," said Glenn Lammi, chief counsel of the legal studies division at the Washington Legal Foundation, a conservative group. "He has a limited-government view of things."

Bush gets nearly four times as much as Kerry

WASHINGTON, May 6, 2004 — More than 1,300 registered lobbyists have given slightly more than $1.8 million to President George W. Bush over the last six years, according to a Center for Public Integrity study comparing the donations of all registered lobbyists from 1998 through March 2004. Sen. John Kerry received $520,000 from 442 lobbyists during the same period.

Such numbers account for a significant percentage of those who ply the influence game. In fact, the lobbyists who donated to Bush have represented about 6,000 clients; those who gave to Kerry, approximately 3,000 clients. Combined, these figures add up to more than half of all the companies that hire lobbyists, according to the Senate Office of Public Records. The SOPR says that there are currently 24,000 lobbyists registered to represent 15,000 clients.
