Karen Hughes on Track to Confirmation

By BARRY SCHWEID, AP Diplomatic Writer 18 minutes ago

A scaled-back Senate Foreign Relations Committee showered praise Friday on Karen Hughes and put the former political adviser to President Bush on a fast track to confirmation as the State Department's top public relations official.

Only two senators attended the hearing. In the absence of votes in Congress on Fridays, most lawmakers leave early for the weekend.

The session barely delved into what Hughes will do about turning around anti-American sentiment in the world, part of her job if she is confirmed as Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.

Hughes said her challenge is "the urgent need to foster greater understanding, more respect and a sense of common ideals among Americans and people of different countries, cultures and faiths around the world."..........

7. We shouldn't be appointing any member of the current
Administration to anything until we get to the bottom of the Rove conspiracy. Hughes was a member of the White House Iraq Group, charged with propagandizing the need for the US to attack Iraq. Other members included Rove, Libby, Bolton and Hadley.

Our representatives should attend to business and not be doing weekend getaways while Bush is diligently kicking participants in the conspiracy upstairs.

This appointment sickens me. Do we really want Karen Hughes representing America's image abroad? It seems to me we can, and should, do a lot better.

12. Why do I feel like its two steps forward, one step back...
A few minutes ago I was feeling pleased with the way things are developing regarding Rovegate and this morning's House hearings with the CIA officials. And now this! Karen is up to her neck in Rovegate, someone needs to ask her on the record about her role in the outing of Ms. Plame and how she helped manufacture evidence to justify the war with Iraq. She was on the plane to Africa with that bunch.

We don't need empty chairs Praising her for goodness sakes!

These are not the appointments that are opposed. This is staff. Hell, Rice needs someone with half a brain around to hold her hand, thats probably why they are doing it.

21. Not so fast, me bucko. Joseph Biden loves her!
These are not the appointments that are opposed. This is staff.

Heh. Right. She was only one of the foremost liars who paved the way for the Iraq invasion.

Not that any Senate Dems want to be reminded of how spinelessly they collapsed in the face of that p.r. blitz. Being turned into Hughes' bitch isn't a badge of pride.

Unless, of course, one is a worm like Biden, who recently wrote in praise of Hughes:

"I am particularly interested in and supportive of the nomination of Karen Hughes to be undersecretary of state for public diplomacy ... I believe that she is highly qualified because of her professional background, and, importantly, enjoys the full confidence of the president and the secretary of state."

16. Something is seriously fishy with the story
Let's just wait. Hopefully they were just skunking her -- and there will be another meeting -- without her, I assume, on Tuesday.

19. That's the way I understand this.
Today was just placing her name in nomination, lots of praise blah, blah blah. The committee will vote on Tuesday to send to the full Senate with or without recommendation. Then the full Senate votes. I think there is an opportunity to raise some interesting questions.

20. Here's billmon's riveting take on
hughes..
<<snips>>

Senate Democrats must have gotten lost on the way to the hearing. Not one showed up. Instead, according to the Associated Press:
“A scaled-back Senate Foreign Relations Committee showered praise Friday on Karen Hughes and put the former political adviser to President Bush on a fast track to confirmation as the State Department’s top public relations official.”

No biggie. Hughes, a prime architect of the White House's Iraq invasion propaganda blitz, was only fingered in The New York Times today as one of the several thousand White House officials called to testify in front of Patrick Fitzgerald's grand jury. Not enough for any of the Dems to justify getting up in the morning, I guess.

All this would be bad enough, but Think Progress (which really should get some kind of public service award for trying to help the poor, pitiful Dems) goes on to describe the love letter that Joe Biden submitted in lieu of a personal appearance:

I am particularly interested in and supportive of the nomination of Karen Hughes to be undersecretary of state for public diplomacy ... I believe that she is highly qualified because of her professional background, and, importantly, enjoys the full confidence of the president and the secretary of state.
She will bring new energy and creativity to our public diplomacy efforts. I commend the president for choosing her and persuading her to return to Washington, and I look forward to working with her for the next three years on this important foreign policy priority.”

More snips..
