Bush aide misled FBI, say reports - The Guardian
July 23, 2005

The investigation into the White House leak of a CIA agent's identity is now focusing on whether two top administration officials provided misleading statements to the FBI, it was reported yesterday.

According to press accounts, Karl Rove, the president's chief political adviser, and Lewis "Scooter" Libby, the vice-president's chief of staff, both provided testimony that was later contradicted by other evidence.

The revelations come at a time when the burgeoning scandal over the outing of a CIA undercover agent, Valerie Plame, is threatening to engulf the White House.

3. *yawn*
Sorry, I'll believe it when I see it.

Too many "scandals" and other diabolical episodes that were "supposed" to bring down this evil administration didn't pan out for various and sundry reasons.

I hope this one sticks. But, I won't hold my breath.

In the meantime, wake me when this nightmare is over!

:boring:

5. This is the only Bush scandal
that has it's own Special Investigator and a Grand Jury. This is way past the point of no return. Indictments will be coming soon. You don't get a panel of judges to agree to imprison a Pulitzer Prize winning NYT's reporter unless you've got a rock solid case to begin with.

15. Gotta mention those irate folks at the CIA too!
Although they are spinning furiously to minimize the damage, I think the damage is already past minimal. Whether they can absorb the damage and effectively move on, is still an open question to me. This has certainly got my interest.

6. Hardball is giving this 45 minutes tonight.
It's not a blurb anymore. It's got that summer of '74 feeling.

10. I remember that summer very well, and the two years that it took....
...to get there. But the journey was well worth the time, wasn't it? :-)

9. It appears that you chose your boardname well....
...unfortunately for you, it will not dampen the enthusiasm of those of us who believe that the political climate in this country is beginning to change for the better.

"Yawn", yourself.

14. Yeah, I'm kinda feeling that way too...
I'm typically pretty jaded, cynical, and pessimistic when it comes to the direction the country has been going since the late 70s (anyone remember Howard Jarvis?). But more than a generation has passed since the decline began, and I actually have some hope that the pendulum may be swinging back. I think the three biggest threats are: 1) the loss of our free press 2) the corruption of the voting process, and 3) churches being reduced to little more than branches of the Republican party. Nevertheless, I think the tide may be starting to turn. Rove, DSM, Bush's Social Security "plan", shitty economy, jobs going overseas, and Iraq may be enough to tip the scales.

11. The British rarely express their displeasure in such vulgar terms....
...in their world, "misled" is a pretty strong statement.

8. We have a cancer--within, close to the Presidency, that's growing.
PRESIDENT: In other words, you, your judgment as to where it stands, and where we go now---

DEAN: I think, I think that, uh, there's no doubt about the seriousness of the problem we're, we've got. We have a cancer--within, close to the Presidency, that's growing. It's growing daily. It's compounding, it grows geometrically now because it compounds itself. Uh, that'll be clear as I explain you know, some of the details, uh, of why it is, and it basically is because (1) we're being blackmailed; (2) uh, people are going to start perjuring themself very quickly that have not had to perjure themselves to protect other people and the like. And that is just--and there is no assurance--

12. All of the information being provided to the press is coming
from Rove's camp/attorney. Rove is writing this script. The hope being that when it gets hotter and he is actually charged the defense by the Repugs/White House will be that "it is all old news", "everyone already knows that", "this has all been previously reported", etc. etc. etc.

Then Mrs. Greenspan and other media whores will say "we aleady knew this", "this has been previously reported", "this is old news", etc. etc. etc. Just like the facts around fixing intelligence to meet the policy in the runup to the war the national media would not report on the DSM because "it was old news", "we all knew that", etc. etc. etc.

Karl Rove's trial defense kicked into full gear with the apperance of all of those reports in the writing press that were posted Thursday night/Friday morning.
