THAT BUG HAS SET THE TOWN BUZZING
PHILADELPHIANS WANT ANSWERS...BUT NOBODY'S TALKING
By DANA DiFILIPPO

G.W. Miller III / Daily News

Robert Williams (left) and Talib Shabazz discuss the bugging situation. Williams says he suspects Republicans are "playing dirty pool."

THE CONSPIRACY theorists say he's been framed. But critics think he could be a criminal.

One week after police found a bug in Mayor Street's office, frustrated Philadelphians have more questions than answers.

What led the feds to the mayor? Did he break the law? Was this a political ploy to boot the brash Democrat out of City Hall? Was it racially motivated? Does Street know more than he's saying?

An informal poll of people on city streets yesterday proved that while the questions are mounting, one thing's for certain - no one's talking about Sam Katz.

No answers from the FBI??? Wonder if they will investigate themselves :bounce:

1. No wonder the economy is in the dumper, and we have war, war, war
The 'adults' in charge of this country as so friggin busy dicking around with dirty games and working to dismantle the democrats in every public office that there really is no time left for national security, diplomacy, job creation, etc.

Our country has been 100% hijacked by thugs......and the demo party just sits around wondering about 'stuff' and wondering if things will 'grow legs' and suspecting foul play, but never really going on the friggin offensive.

When will we go on an offensive?

7. Rick Santorum has ben given the job of Philly votes.
Senator Rick Santorum has been given the chore of delivering Philadelphia votes.Sorry no link but it was posted here last week. Repugs beleive if they get Philly then can get all of Pa. I was wondering how to alert the Philadelphia Inquirer and other local media to this.

2. We are dangerously close to a full-on police state
and the FBI wants MORE wiretap powers in Patriot II !!!

I knew all along the real purpose of expanded police powers was NOT to get terrorists, but to spy on political opposition. This proves the point.

It's not a case IF these powers will be abused but WHEN.

8. Yes, the GOP has needed to fix that Watergate loophole.....
They can't allow it to be considered a 'crime' to bug offices any longer. Poor tricky dick...bamboozled by democracy and all.

3. Street's poll numbers up
Street and Katz were neck in neck before this scandal emerged, and this morning the local radio reported that Street has a ten-point lead over Katz. This smear strategy may be backfiring as Street's extremely loyal African American base (who hold a majority in the city among Democrats) are getting fired up about the government secretly targeting yet another powerful black leader.

There is also a campaign going on in town proclaiming that a vote for Katz is a vote for Bush. Posters and buttons around town say: "Old Adage: Lie down with the dogs, Wake up with the fleas; New Adage: Lie down with Katz, Wake up with Bush, Cheney and Ashcroft". Katz's spokeswoman actually had defend her candidate against that charge, since Philly has 4-to-1 registered Dems who don't relish the thought of a Bush ass-kisser in the city hall. She announced that Katz would NOT campaign for Bush next year (a total lie of course).

This is defintitely getting interesting.

4. I think Street is in trouble
I think he may very well eke out a win, but NE Philadelphia hates him.

The thought of Bush having Katz in PA help next year is the main reason why I would not vote for him.

But let's be candid. Street's tenure as Mayor has been less than inspiring.

5. Jiacinto
Do you think that this attack on Street is a way to implicate Rendell merely through association (assuming damning info comes out about Street's activities)?

They've got Texas, Florida, and Gropenfuhrer moving into California. Is Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh and Philly with Alabama in between) their next big electoral vote target?

BTW, hope you've found a job you like in a place you'd like to live. Hang in there, kid. You're a smart fella.

6. You'll find a lot of Philadelphians
who disagree with you, jiacinto. There are even many who feel that John Street has been a better Mayor for all of Philly-- in neighborhood cleanup and development, especially--than Ed Rendell. I'm a Democratic Committeeperson who supported John White (another African American candidate) against Street in the l999 Democratic primary, because I was afraid Street wasn't warm and fuzzy enough for my fellow white voters. Their continued hostility toward him makes it clear that they would prefer warm and fuzzy--but the fact is, he's been a very good mayor, and the miasma of negative stuff out there is really misleading. He's a tough pol, he's been in politics in Phila. for 25 years--and his record is clean.
