Danny Glover: Latin station won't demonize U.S.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- American actor Danny Glover on Tuesday defended a new TV station financed by Venezuela's government as a way to bring Latin America together, denying claims by critics that it will be used to demonize the United States.

The channel Telesur, which Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has promoted as an alternative to foreign media giants, began regular broadcasts Sunday and is transmitting news, documentaries and other programs to various Latin countries.

"Certainly the television station itself is not a tool that would be used to demonize the north," said Glover, a member of the station's advisory board. "It is a tool to be used to celebrate the extraordinary diversity of this hemisphere."

The station has drawn concern in the U.S. Congress, where House members last week approved a measure to transmit radio and television broadcasts to Venezuela to ensure citizens receive "accurate news."

Jeez...The US has become so full of itself that it is trying to dictate to other countries what they can or can not show on TV in their own country. I love this line in the article:

Brit advisor Tariq Ali says Telesur's editorial line must remain independent


Pakistani-born, British left-winger Tariq Ali has been visiting Venezuela for the launch of South American TV channel, Telesur. The new station, seen as an answer to CNN in Spanish, has been funded by the governments of Venezuela, Argentina, Cuba and Uruguay.

Tariq Ali is a member of Telesur's advisory board, along with Le Monde Diplomatique editor, Ignacio Ramonet, US film star Danny Glover, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Adolfo Perez Esquivel and Uruguayan writer, Eduardo Galeano.

Ali proposes that Telsur's editorial line be completely independent, maintaining that it will allow the channel to be critical of all the region's governments and avoid any attempts at censorship. Tariq Ali has experience in broadcasting and is also connected to the Arab channel, Al Jazeera TV, which has become a model for Telesur to follow ... "we have agreed to maintain a separation between the ownership and editorial structures."

The intellectual praises the first news report he viewed last Sunday saying the novel form of presentation sets the style. One of the aims of the channel on the recommendation of board members is to give viewers the power to critique the channel. Ali adds that one of the more immediate challenges for the future is to produce programs for women, children and Latin Americans living in the USA.

Chavez doesn't need "promoting the Venezuelan cause" to justify Telesur, the news from around Venezuela falls into the US MSM black holes often enough that he needs something that will talk about them at all.

this channel will explode all over the spanish speaking world. I can't wait to see it myself, I hope we can get it on cable in NYC.
