Bush to receive the Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award from ALEC
Edited on Fri Jul-29-05 04:03 PM by Dover
President George W. Bush will address the members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) during its 32nd Annual Meeting in Grapevine, Texas on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

"President George W. Bush's steadfast commitment to free-markets, and limited government is a hallmark of this organization. It is truly an honor to have the President speak at our Annual Meeting," said Georgia State Representative Earl Ehrhart, ALEC's national chairman.

The conference is being held at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine, Texas, Aug.3 to Aug. 5. The President will address the conference attendees during Wednesday's luncheon and will be awarded the Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award.

The Thomas Jefferson Freedom Award is given annually to an individual who has established an exemplary record of accomplishment in advancing the fundamental Jeffersonian principles of free markets, limited government, federalism and individual liberty. Past recipients have included the men and women of the United States Armed Forces, President Ronald Reagan, President George H. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, among others. ..cont'd

Don't know anything about ALEC? FIND OUT!

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) boasts “During the 1999-2000 legislative cycle, ALEC legislators introduced more than 3100 pieces of legislation based on our models, and more than 450 of these were enacted. . . . In the legislative Sessions of 2000, there were more than 2150 introductions promoting ALEC Policy.”
So why haven’t we ever heard of this group?

Because corporate America doesn’t want us to know. Close scrutiny reveals that ALEC is little more than a screen for hundreds of big corporations and trade associations to advance their legislative agendas in state capitals from coast to coast.

8. And he should get that prize!
Because ALEC is just the kind of organization Bush represents. They tried to pass legislation in Texas a couple years ago to redefine ecological terrorists as:

"two or more persons organized for the purpose of supporting any politically motivated activity intended to obstruct or deter any person from participating in an activity involving animals or an activity involving natural resources."

The law would have created an ONLINE DATABASE of anyone found guilty of such "crimes", and make the "criminal" responsible for informing the govt. of address changes so the database could be updated, and made any filming of an "animal enterprise" a felony. That would have meant that reporters filming expired meat products at the grocery store would have made them felons.

See the link at the bottom for Texas HB 433. Scary stuff. Fortunately even conservatives were against the bill and it was laughed out of our congress ... for now.

14. Ack! Imagine what Jefferson would think of * and his "Christian" beliefs
And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerve in the brain of Jupiter. But may we hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this most venerated reformer of human errors.

27. ALEC's membership

ALEC enjoys what it calls an "impressive presence" among the leadership of state legislatures, with a membership that includes speakers, presidents, and majority and minority leaders in 22 senates and 30 houses. The group's alumni also include nine governors and more than 80 members of Congress, among them House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Majority Whip Tom DeLay. The council wasn't always so dominated by business interests. Founded in 1973 by conservative activist Paul Weyrich and a handful of state legislators, ALEC initially positioned itself as a counterweight to liberal foundations and think tanks, focusing on social issues like abortion and the Equal Rights Amendment. It wasn't until the late 1980s that ALEC shifted its emphasis to drawing up bills that benefit industry. Now the group seeks to "espouse Jeffersonian, free-market principles in the process of formulating innovative policy ideas and solutions," says ALEC spokesman Joseph Rinzel.

37. What must it be like in jefferson's grave?
Surely, he's more than spinning in that grave. They're probably
drilling him with drills and cutting him in to bits with diamond
saws, republicans licking up the blood of their distortions.

Abruptly, the grave stone tilts back and frankenjefferson emerges
to look at his creation. And smiling without sentience, old
frank gets to work cloning republicans.

All the while, the half eaten, cut up body of jefferson continues
to spurn in his grave every bush or ray gun of his captors.

Oh, were they to photograph all the republicans drinking jefferson's
blood, with the flaming crosses, the white pointy hats, and the blood
stains from the chains they used to hold jefferson down... and
greedily, they lick their pointy teeth and scurry off under the
carpet to breed with their roach buddies in roach motels.

But, nevermind. The Chimp needs to keep "claring brush" for his ATV BIKE...so he can "burn them miles...since his poor knees are sore and out of commission." :-(

Budget-Cutting Strategies for Cash-Strapped States

snip>

III. TEN STRATEGIES FOR
CUTTING BUDGET DEFICITS

The strategies outlined in this study include short-, medium-, and long-term plans for reducing the cost of government. Some of the short-term measures are imperfect and impolitic and will do little to fix long-term budget imbalances. In many states, however, the severity of the current fiscal situation makes stopgap measures unavoidable.

It is important to remember that no matter how successful state governments are in employing short-term measures to close deficits, the seeds of fiscal crisis will remain. Only by fundamentally restructuring government will state policy makers be able to contain
spending growth and return accountability to state finance.

The following ten strategies will help states do both.

1. Go Where the Money Is: Reduce Workforce Costs
