Ahmadinejad not man in Tehran embassy photo - CIA
Fri Jul 29, 2005 5:43 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A CIA analysis has concluded a hostage-taker
pictured in an old photo at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran is not Iranian
President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a U.S. official said on Friday.

The analysis compared photos of Ahmadinejad and an embassy
hostage-taker whom former U.S. hostages identified as the newly
elected Iranian leader. It found discrepancies serious enough to
suggest the two are different men.

"If there's a case to made that Ahmadinejad was one of the
hostage-takers, it will not be made on the basis of those
photographs," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity
because of sensitive nature of the subject matter.

The photos were widely published in the U.S. media late last month.

The official said the photo analysis was only one part of a broad
inter-agency investigation into Ahmadinejad's role in the aftermath
of the 1979 revolution that severed U.S.-Iranian relations and
brought Islamic rule to Iran.

2. Heh, I forgot all about that media circus last month. Guess this business
with Rove and DSM made them think twice about pushing hatred of Iran to justify a hit.

I'm sure they'll put it in their pocket for later when things cool off a bit. They'll come up with some other lie to bomb the "evil ones". :eyes:

3. You know, your post gives me just a wee bit of optimism.
I have been saddened thinking that Fitzgerald will, or may, get swept aside. But this misadministration knows it's being watched and scrutinzed extremely carefully.
Thanks. I needed that.

6. It's a strange kind of optimism though, ain't it? You see all sorts
of evidence that they know they are in trouble, but much of the evidence is quite painful. They sure are in a rush!

Ram thru CAFTA and the Energy Bill;
Push for Bolton in the UN;
Push for deadline on Roberts to SC
Get the DOD (and the associated torture) out of the press lime light by dropping the DOD bill for the NRA bill (talk about tossing out a wedge issue bone!)

Quite the price to pay - I sure hope Fitz has enough on them. Only good thing is that expanding the ME war has been put on hold. They've geared up the silent domestic war instead.

9. Well, they can't go around claiming it's faulty intelligence these days,
now can they? What a tangled web we weave.....

4. Probably the WH wouldn't release the finding or would just lie
so the CIA wanted to set the record straight ahead of time.

5. Friday late news dump- will not get the coverage the false allegations got
Can't help but notice the 5:43 pm Friday timing of this news release that debunks and discredits the hostages' allegations that were so widely spread as fact and served to demonize the Iranian leader.

7. So what is up with this loop?
We went through the same bullshit like a month ago after the Iranian election. First the administration belches beligerantly that Ahmadinejad is surely a bad Iranian from the dark days, and then some spy analyst says well actually after detailed analysis no he's not a bad Iranian from the dark days. Then they wait a month and replay the entire scene as if it hadn't just happened. :wtf:

Oh by the way if Ahmadinejad were a leader of the students who took over the embassy during the Iranian revolution that overthrew the shah, that would be precisely none of our business.

8. This doesn't help whip up the war fever against Iran!
Was Valerie Plame involved in this CIA finding? Let's call Judith Miller and find out! Ooops, she is in jail.

10. So now they've said TWICE that it's not him.
And whoever it REALLY was, SO WHAT?

Some REVOLUTIONARY fighting a BRUTALLY oppressive regime
had some followers...
They took hostages (allies and supporters of his oppressors)
and eventually released them in good health.

I seem to recall a REVOLUTINARY (name of George Washington)
once fought a similar struggle.
He, however, took a more direct route,
and just KILLED and MAIMED an assload of his oppressors and their friends.
