Church Members To Picket NC Marine's Funderal In Minnesota
Moorhead, MN -- A controversial Kansas church plans to picket the funeral of a North Carolina-based marine who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq.

A church attorney says ten members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, plan to picket before the Camp Lejeune Marine's funeral in Moorhead, Minnesota.

The church blames the US government for a bomb that exploded on its compound in 1995. The Westboro Baptist Church says it was bombed to stop its anti-gay preaching.

At a soldier's funeral in Oklahoma last week, the group carried signs that said "America is Doomed" and "God Hates Fags."

28. My sis's UU church "shunned" them at a local high school
This bunch of nuts (or a clone) wanted to picket her kids' high school because they had "safe zones" for gay students and general policies of acceptance.

Townspeople were talking about counter-picketing, but my sister suggested that a quieter, more peaceful way of countering these hate-filled yoyos would be to get between them and the school and present them with a line of backs. Refuse to engage in any kind of interaction. Shun them.

Apparently it worked quite well.

My highschool has the "safe-zones" set up. All of the teachers that participate in it are completely volunteer... there's quite a few.

26. good thinking
and I hate violence. But with these fuckers picketing at Matthew Shepard's (spelling?) funeral and now at soldiers' funerals, they deserve it. That is absolutely disgraceful. Beyond words.

What makes them think that is going to convince anyone of anything?
All they are doing is pissing people off and making them disgusted. (My husband just said, "unless they are evangelicals")
Who wants to believe in a God that approves of that shit?

17. you know....
they only show up when they're sure nobody will stand up to them. They showed up at the funeral for Staff Sgt. Christopher Piper of Marblehead Mass. last month. When word got out that demonstrators from Kansas planned to disrupt Piper's funeral, residents vowed not to let them interfere. Every time demonstrators spoke out, the 14-man Boston Police Department bagpipe band started playing drowning them out. On June 29th funeral services were held at the new Chicopee High School auditorium for Captain John W. Maloney who was killed in Ramadi Iraq. This same group planned to show up to protest at his funeral as well, but because of their experience the week before, they never bothered to show up. This is a strategy that should be followed nationwide.

Same type of tactics the lifers use at clinics. They gang up on a weak women at thier most vulnerable state and scarlet letter them or worse. I can't stand the religous right and msm media portrayal of religion it disgust me. The left's version of christianity seems more inline as to what christ taught.

I'm disgusted by this... When I've protested there, they have set a up a free speech zone. I hope they afford the family that. I can't believe this. I'm totally torn what to do. I've sent this to everyone I know around here.. maybe we can form a chain and keep these bastards away from the family.

21. They must be suicidal. Picketing Camp Lejeune?
That's boot camp for many marines, isn't it? I know that my friend's son who is a marine graduated from boot camp there.

Stupid move on their part. Picketing Marines at a dead Marine's funeral might garner them more attention than they had anticipated.

29. I just reread the article.
I see, now. Yeah, I'm with you. Let them picket at Lejeune.

I hope some of Lejeune's bad boys show up for the funeral, though. Those fuckers need an ass kicking. The bad thing is, though, that they send their kids to do the dirtywork, so assault on a minor would be the result of kicking Phelps'clan's asses.

34. Not to get off the point, but........
the boot camp you refer to is in South Carolina at Parris Island.
Canp Lejeune is in North Caroline where I spent 9 months lo those many years ago.
As for this group using the funeral of a Marine (or any service person for that matter) is despicable. I think the shunning idea mentioned further up the thread is the way to handle these people. Without an audience, what do they have?

30. God's a loser; if he/she/it hated fags, they should have been vaporized
If ya really believe in this super-whopper witchy thing and you believe that it hates non-breeders, then it would have rid itself and the rest of us of such scurrilous entities.

Either god's a fuck-up, an ineffectual semi-deity, or it doesn't mind such people. My default position is the obvious one: they ain't such a thing, and it's all either deluded actions or deliberate crap from mere mortals.

35. This makes no sense whatsoever.
They blame the government for a 1995 bombing at their church, so they plan to picket the funeral of a marine who was killed in Iraq ten years later?

:wtf:

They should be locked up for doing this. The family of that marine should not be subjected to this insanity at all.

38. Fundraiser
Make money off of them! Several gay groups do just that. They organize a fundraiser. People pledge $1 or whatever for how ever many minutes the freaks stay and local businesses match the overall pledges. Then, they take the money and donate it to a charity (in this case, to the family for expenses). It is a great way to piss them off. Or they can do the "angel" thing, where people dress up with large, high wings and encircle the group with their backs to the freaks...and they (the good guys) sing hymns and the like. That demonstration prevents mourners from seeing the signs and hearing the hate.

42. Ha, yes, I contributed to the cause...
About 2000, Mr. Phelps' group was determined to picket outside a high school. The students were performing a play with some sort of theme deemed too gay by Mr. Phelps and his followers. So a teacher got things organized and folks pledged $$ for every minute these protesters did their thing, or folks just pledged a flat amount. The protesters lasted about 18 minutes, were met with a couple hundred counter-protesters or so, and consequently raised more than $2000 for the Good Samaritan Project in Kansas City.

If someone could organize something like that, it would be great. Actually, Phelps and his followers have inadvertently raised lots of money for gay-friendly organizations and missions.

Fuck those loonys. Sometimes you can make lemonade from lemons.
