US stem cell sponsor sees veto-proof Senate backing

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An expansion of federally funded embryonic stem cell research could pass the U.S. Senate with a veto-proof margin now that the chamber's leader backs the idea, a leading sponsor of the effort said on Sunday. But it may be harder getting the super-majority needed to override a possible presidential veto in the House of Representatives, Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Arlen Specter said.

Specter said the decision last week by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist to defy President Bush and support legislation liberalizing the administration's policy on stem cell research had given the effort a "big boost" in Congress. "I think we're on our way," Specter, co-sponsor of a bill to expand the research, told CBS's "Face the Nation."

Bush, a Republican, has said he will veto any bill that extends embryonic stem cell research beyond the limits he imposed in 2001. The president is opposed because embryos are destroyed when the stem cells are extracted.

Frist, a Tennessee Republican and heart surgeon who may seek his party's presidential nomination in 2008, broke with Bush on Friday by endorsing a bill already passed by the House -- though not with a veto-proof margin -- that would overturn the limits Bush imposed four years ago.

After reading it, I changed the views of 3 right wingers by daring them to read it with an open mind. They were floored by the research that is NOT being reported my the media. Get a copy (July 2005)and educate a few folks.If each of us convert one, One at a time, they will see.

that they had their 2/3. Hopefully, the House will come to their senses and get the nexessary numbers.

Will the media report this? Make a big deal of it when he does? The overwhelming majority of the public supports this, to the tune of something like 70%.

Bush vetoes this and his numbers will sink into the basement.

Of course, I don't want stem cell legislation to be vetoed, there's too much to lose. But if he does, there better be widespread media coverage of it. I want everyone to know about it.

This is about federal subsidies for corporate research - corporate welfare. Just because the fundies have some nouveau jihad about blastocysts doesn't mean the corporations aren't going after public money. In the pecking order, the corporations always come first.

It'd be interesting to know when the religionists abandoned the 'spiritus' theology of soul -- the idea that a baby became a human being vested with a soul at its first breath (in-spirit-ation). Strange. They cling obsessively to the 'Creation' myth yet abandon the 'spiritus' myth -- both of which come from the same neolithic superstitions.
