School trustee tangled in Web (rants on Free Republic!)
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 02:54 PM by johnfunk
What's wrong with our educational system? Well, let's start with Freepers on the school board!
School trustee tangled in Web
By William J. Kemble, Correspondent
07/31/2005

HYDE PARK - Two school board trustees say comments posted on a Web site by new board member Kevin Post may conflict with his obligation to uphold state and federal education laws.

In telephone interviews last week, Trustee Doug Hieter said a district resident contacted him about Post's comments on the Web site www.freerepublic.com under the user name kphockey2. Hieter said he's particularly concerned about seemingly homophobic comments made by Post.

Trustee Stephen Hughes said he was troubled by Post's "derogatory" references to school board actions and the types of people Post considers harmful to society.

...

POST'S profile was deleted from the Web site following Friday's interview, but on Thursday night included this message: "F the Democrats! I am a former Republican Committeeman in the Town of Plattekill/County of Ulster in New York State. School Board Elect member of the Hyde Park School Board. I will eventually be a Republican Committeeman in the Town of Hyde Park/County of Dutchess in New York State."

...

ON JULY 5, four days after Post started his school board term, he wrote: "Got to vote against the national school lunch program/reduced or free meals tonight. I hope it turned some heads." In another posting, he wrote that in "my first official meeting as a member of the skool board, I cast a NO vote on the participation of our district in the Nation(al) School Lunch program. Too bad the lemmings said yes."
And there's more -- much, much more.
ON EDIT: Spelling...

In many cases these meals are the only ones the kids get on any given day.
I'm actually glad this bozo posted his ugliness, though - gladder still that someone was alert & caught it & brought it out!

Kevin Post's bio from the Hyde Park Schools Web site:
Kevin Post

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Western New England College in Springfield MA in 2000. I am a 1996 graduate of John A. Coleman Catholic High School, Hurley NY.

I am employed by Central Hudson Gas and Electric as the Electric Operations Engineer for the Kingston District. I was previously assigned to the Electric Distribution Planning Section.

I was a member of the Ulster County Youth Board during High School which was responsible for funding recommendations to the UC Legislature for youth programs. I am an active Parishioner at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Hyde Park.

I sought election to the Hyde Park Board of Education because the taxpayers deserve an advocate on the board to represent their interests. Growing up, I learned the value of a dollar and continue to live by that important lesson.

Pressures on the district are increasing and expansion plans are being discussed. The decisions made in the next three years are crucial to the future of our school district, the children and taxpayers. Therefore, as a member of the Hyde Park Board of Education I will make fiscally sound decisions.

My goal is to continue improving our students educational experiences without bankrupting the taxpayers.

My wife and I thank you for your support as I work to safeguard your hard earned tax dollars.
Can you say "What a crock of Rove"?

Maybe another freeper posted it to make it look like a smear from DEMS. The rethuglicans really like playing victims lately, so I expect to see heavy denial by the guy. If he admits it, then he's toast. So his only choice is to cry foul.

61. "...I work to safeguard your hard earned tax dollars..."
Whenever someone uses the phrase "your hard earned tax dollars" you can be almost assured that individual has lived a soft, easy life. People who pull themselves up by the bootstraps the hard way just don't talk like that because it would be considered both loutish and sissified at the same time (not an easy feat to accomplish). And sure enough, a quick glance at this boy's photo says it all; a pudgy, soft, Mamma's-boy who has probably been on the receiving end of a thousand wedgies and a hundred swirlies. And now he's out there trying to prove that he's really a tough guy. He looks just like my Republican Congressman. It's guys like this who comprise the heart and soul of the Republican agenda. There isn't a real man in the bunch.

if we use money for food so the kiddies can eat, the big wigs on the hill get less. Republicans care about this sort of stuff. They will scream at spending a dollar on a poor child, but remain silent when major raises are voted on (and passed) for the fat cats.

38. the really odd thing is, unless I'm mistaken, he voted against...
...participation in a Federal school lunch program, and would have INCREASED the burden on local taxpayers if the school district tried to maintain the same level of service. Since that money comes from the feds, even eliminating the service funded by the program would have had little impact on local education expenditures-- or does the local district have to match federal funds? Anyone know?

89. If they wanted to maintain the same level of service . . .
which is probably what he was positioning - he doesn't want them to provide lunch at all. There's quite a few RWers who believe Mom should pack lunch for kids and that schools shouldn't be involved in the lunch business at all.

But you're right in that School Food Service programs are to be run as Enterprise funds - that is, they are supposed to make money from lunch sales to support their operations with little or no local support from the General Fund.

No, there is no local match requirement for Nat School Lunch Prog.

90. I've lobbied to eliminate the "reduced" lunch category,
in favor of simply Free or Paid. It would cost about $150 million - which is a drop in the bucket for the federal govt budget. We've had some success, but it's such a slow slog. My rep. Bob Beauprez believes parents (i.e., MOM) should pack a lunch every day - because his mom did.

10. What an arrogant Ba--s--rd
When my kids were younger, my husband was outsourced from his $90,000 a year IT job. He was out of work for almost a year. By the end of that time, we had gone through all our savings, were in arrears on mortgage payments, and were getting our food from the local food pantry.

I applied for my kids to have free lunches with the school district. I simply could not afford to buy food for them for lunch. I had to stretch what little food we had for our dinners. Many, many times I myself did not even eat lunch so I could save food to give to my kids.

What a cruel, cruel man. I suppose he thinks it is just "lazy, welfare families" who are "taking advantage of the system"?

43. I was in a similar situation..
at one time.

Long story short, my husband and I were both working but were not taking in enough money to cover our bills and so we went on food stamps for about 3 months. It was a small amount, but it really made all the difference for us.

This is just more extreme hypocrisy from the pro-life crowd. Republicans want to force women to have children that they can't afford, yet those same Republicans don't even want to make the smallest sacrifice to ensure the children will at least get one decent meal a day.

Can you imagine the society Republicans want to create? I guess we can get an pretty good idea if we look at how Romania was in the 80s and 90s.

83. My school growing up had many students on the program.
This was in the late eighties, early nineties, and about 60% of our student body got some form of subsidized or free lunch. I remember helping out a new student one day in high school who was ashamed to go to lunch with me, worried I'd find out. She'd just moved from a wealthier school district and had been ostracized and made fun of by so-called friends just for getting a meal.

I'll never forget the look on her face when I told her that most of our students got help with lunch and that it was no big deal. She went on to have lots of friends and to feel pretty good about her new school.

Cutting the one good meal they get a day is not only evil, it just keeps them down. Why kick someone when they're already down? Oh, that's right: he's a jerk masquerading as someone who cares.

I love watching the kids at lunch. Most of them are just STARVED! We have about 50% free lunch. I can't imagine what would happen if we didn't have this program. Thankfully, our board is very supportive - they even help with money for free breakfast.

I'm afraid to say that I suspect this coming week, some one will be saying at the last minute that Hackett wasn't a Marine, but a dishwasher for KBR or something equally asinine. It won't matter that it is immediately refuted with the truth; they still will have made the claim and that message will stick and resonate and he'll get toasted by Schmidt. God, I hope I am wrong.

Anyway, great job to whomever on exposing this sucker Post.

As others have pointed out, this moran voted to turn down federal money which would have cost local people more. In any situation or discussion, they ask themselves 'what would piss off liberals?' Cost, practicality, pragmatism, morality are all secondary (if they are on the radar at all).

Did this kid get on the school board just to be a jerk and screw things up?

Having been very active in local politics (my wife served on our city council for eight years), I can tell you that the general public gets very unhappy with foul language and gratuitous slurs and prejudicial attitudes from elected officials. There's nothing wrong with having strong, principled views, but they have to be out there in the open and they have to be presented in a rational, respectful manner.

In this day of the Internet and search engines and data archives, a politician must expect that his every past public utterance will be on display and subject to intense scrutiny by political rivals. Kevin Post should enjoy what little time he has left on the school board, because his re-election chances are nil, and (if Illinois law allows it) his chances of being recalled in the very near future are excellent.

However, I do disagree with the poster who said something about the ACLU going nuts if this had been a liberal. There have been at least two incidents about DUers losing their jobs/work because of their postings on public message boards, and the ACLU wasn't involved in the least.

Either way, public comments are public comments, whether you speak them or type them.

Welcome to public life. Might want to tone it down some. Your fellow school board members, believe it or not, are human beings, and they will take offense at such terminology as "lemmings," no matter how richly deserved.

"This was not an invasion of privacy. For you to encourage people to contact the paper with this angle is foolish. The Freeper made no secret of his winning office on FR."

Exactly, Dufus ergo fair game.

Make your opinions public but your identify private. Doug Hieter obviously made the typical parochial mistake of assuming that FR is not being monitored by his Brit completion.

See Post #66. This New York newspaper makes an issue about "homophobia", but then calls Terri Schiavo a vegetable.

Seems very hypocritical of them.

Actually I'd recommend NOT contacting the paper.

The best course to help is for this story to die a quick death, and hope voters have short term memories. The "good f'ing riddance quote" is not going to sit well with a lot of people.

To: Dan from Michigan
That would be a wise thing to do -- not to contact the newspaper.

I felt very bad about the United States (which I have always been proud of) when Terri Schiavo was so publicly murdered here.

People forget that Nazi Germany first had setup gas chambers in hospitals to "dispose" of people with disabilities. It was later that these gas chambers were moved to concentration camps to kill people there (many Jews, but there were quite a few Catholic priests killed there as well).
81 posted on 07/31/2005 8:07:03 PM PDT by topher (God bless our troops and protect them)

I'd be ROTFLMAO over all of his hand-wringing over gas chambers if his stupidity over Schiavo's death well over a decade ago weren't so pathetic.

Now if this particular FReeper were posing suggestions for anal lube on a homo website, or organizing an illegal traffic-stop "demonstration" against the war, the authorities would be conducting the same level of "investigation," right?

All the information is here, including this guy's postings on Free Republic and the article exposing him in his local upstate newspaper. Also, a lot of other informative comments.

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2005/7/31/123132/277

Here are a couple of his quotes as a poster on Free Republic as described in the news report:

In response to a June 22 post about the death of a John Kerry supporter, kphockey2 wrote: "Good f'ing riddens. One less commie voter. Only 50+ million more to go."

On his vote on school lunches:

ON JULY 5, four days after Post started his school board term, he wrote: "Got to vote against the national school lunch program/reduced or free meals tonight. I hope it turned some heads." In another posting, he wrote that in "my first official meeting as a member of the skool board, I cast a NO vote on the participation of our district in the Nation(al) School Lunch program. Too bad the lemmings said yes."

delightful Mr. Post is the local chapter leader, unless there is another kphockey2 ( 64 members at last count, I believe, but I could be wrong), is an organization that organizes counter-protests - what they refer to as Freeps - in support of what ever we oppose. Quite a number of Kevin's posts discussed his acts of bravery at such counter-demonstrations. I've seen those folks at a few demonstrations in Kingston, New Paltz and Poughkeepsie.

87. In all of this, what I find most dangerous
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 10:38 AM by tomg
(not reprehensible, not homophobic, not callous, not just slam nuts - dangerous)are the comments he made about keeping his real positions hidden from the electorate because they were too extreme. As a first amendment freak, I believe this person has the right to say what he believes without fear. Insofar as he is running for an elected office, he ( like all candidates) has a moral and political obligation to those he might serve to let the people know what it is that he believes, at least on those issues that are relevant to the position he is seeking. I have a very strong feeling that this betrayal of the public is why he was outed.

on edit: with the above said, he has the right to hold those opinions at Central Hudson, at St. Peter's and anywhere else. I am sure that those who know him know {typo} his opinions already. Had he been honest, he could have held those opinions on the School Board ( though I doubt he would ever have been elected). Yeah. I'm furious with this guy.

111. It's One of the Freakers Standard Operating Procedures
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 07:13 AM by maxrandb
Like Rush saying "public screwels" instead of "schools", referring to the Democratic Party as the "Democrat Party", saying "liberal media bias", when anyone who has a longer attention span than a flea, knows that there is no "liberal media bias".

Other examples of the Freakers/Repuke Orwellian speech:

- "John "Fonda" Kerry"
- "KKK Robert Bird"
- "It's Your Money" (when pushing for taxcuts for the wealthy): Means $600 to 90% of the American people, and $275,000.00 to Dick Cheney.
- "Tax and Spend Liberal": Someone who actually practices fiscal responsibility.

and on and on. Now since it seems that 51% of the American people have the attention span of a flea, they have been successful in consolidating their power. See the great post below about how these people have infested our country like "pod people" into everything from the local dog-catcher, to the local school board, to the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches of our national government.

It's going to take a lot of "antibiotics" to flush them out of our system.

112. That is the post I hope makes it to a local paper
as it gets directly to the question of the role of a school board member in terms of keeping an eye out for the interests of the children in the community and their education. This reference alludes, in a gross attempt at crude innuendo humor, at a lack of concern of interest in the youth being served.

So to a troglodyte, perhaps the point of school board is simply to "protect citizens from taxes" - I seriously doubt that most voters, especially those with children or grandchildren or siblings or cousins in public schools - would agree with that being the key point/motivation for service on a school board; nor do I think that most would be comfortable with someone serving on the school board making a "joke" about "reducing the overcrowding."

Ugh.

The evangelicals have made a concerted effort to affect policy at the grass roots. They're willing to put in the time and the energy. So, this is what happens. You get a guy like this on your school board. Our country is littered with these people. Yes, they're narrow-minded and cruel. But, guess what? They did their homework and they got themselves elected or appointed or whatever it took to be in a position to alter our lives.
We let them take over.
