Pollies unimpressed by sheriff badge (Australia)

US President George W Bush's description of Australia as a "sheriff" in the region was not particularly accurate or helpful, politicians said.

Mr Bush's comment revives controversy over the 1999 description of Australia as the USA's "deputy sheriff" in the region.

Asked about the term, Mr Bush told The Australian newspaper: "We don't see (Australia) as a deputy sheriff. We see it as a sheriff. There's a difference

6. It's more of an insult to John Howard than to the country,

but it's thoroughly deserved. In the lead-up to the Iraq invasion
Howard was often drawn by cartoonists wearing a Deputy Sheriff's
badge because of the way he was ready to follow after Sheriff Bush,
who was always drawn like a cowboy. So Bush has made a mistake
in thinking we see ourselves as any sort of Sheriff - we know it
applies to little brown-nosing John Howard.
