Bush: I don't mind protests
By Annabel Crabb
Political Correspondent
Canberra
October 16, 2003

US President George Bush has declared that he doesn't mind if Australian MPs turn their backs on him during his official visit to Canberra next week.

"It means that democracy's alive and well - if somebody feels like they want to express discontent, that's OK. That's democracy," he told the Nine Network in a pre-trip interview aired last night.

Mr Bush said he was anxious to visit Australia to thank the Australian people and Prime Minister John Howard for the support Australia had shown during the Iraq conflict.

But members of the Australian public will be barred from Parliament House during Mr Bush's brief visit, according to House of Representatives Speaker Neil Andrew, who yesterday told MPs that the building would move to high-security alert on the advice of private security specialists.

33. Exactly, just another lie.
A little boy whistling in the dark. Stick and stones may break my bones . . . Of course, Mr. Bring 'Em On isn't going to admit that the opinions of others matter to him. Just like when my first boyfriend broke up with me several decades ago, I would have died before I admitted how devastated I was.

Bush has a hard time expressing himself in other than simple terms.
This is why he appeals to and connects with the common man.

15. Our Opposition MPs are discussing whether or not to applaud
Bush's speech - many are saying they won't, but I suspect that in
the end they'll not have the guts to make a stand.

But the people will have their say - every capital city, and a number
of regional cities will hold protest rallies at 5.0 pm on 22nd,
the day Bush arrives, and in Sydney that will be followed by a
march to the U.S. Consulate (which will be so heavily guarded that
nobody will get near it anyway). I think the turnout will be
pretty impressive - there has always been a strong anti-war lobby
here, and even supporters are beginning to see they've been told a
lot of lies.

Even though he will be segregated from the public, I think even Bush
will realise he's not the hero he'd like to be. I am so looking
forward to it!

Sit on their hands during THE WHOLE SPEECH!!Don't worry, the "speech" will be short (has ADD regarding international and national policies, so their hands probably won't even go to sleep.)

18. Interesting quote from Bush:
He bristled slightly when asked why his own popularity, according to current polling in the United States, had suffered since the war while Prime Minister John Howard's had remained high in Australia. "Well, it must be his charisma," he replied. "He married well, and he's smart."

So can we conclude that Bush's own opinion is:
(a) he has little charisma
(b) he thinks Laura is worthless
(c) he's dumb?

23. Sadly, his comments
were aimed at Simon the leader? of the opposition. Simon has been urging MP's not to turn their backs when the SHrub addreses them. Sadly, Simon is so anxious to please everyone that he has forgotten if he stands for anything. Luckly Bob the wonderful green rep. gave em all hell for not letting the public into the Parliament House. It's great to have taxation and representation here, you progressives in the north should give it a go.

I think, I hope even shrub will notice our little get togethers come next Wednesday.

27. And unconfirmed rumours that there will be armed American
security guards in the building as well, which is so over the top.
Why would anyone want to kill Bush - then Cheney would be President.

Interesting to compare Clinton's first visit here in '95? '96? (not
sure, but during his first term). He spoke to thousands of people
out in the open by the harbour, and got a genuine standing ovation
that lasted for minutes. He also went to The Basement, a jazz club
in Sydney late one night and jammed with the musos. It was so laid
back and friendly - this visit is paranoia unlimited. I wonder why
that is??

34. "Guantanamo on the Ohio River"
When smirky fouled Pittsburgh with his presence Labor Day 2002, all protestors were herded into a fenced area far from the venue, kept in there by guards. ANyone who left was threatened with arrest; one man was in fact arrested (the judge later threw the case out of court).

You should have seen the crowd that they were protecting smirky from: children, middle aged couples, old ladies!

We put on a display of our anger at Bush that day, but even besides the fenced in "First Amendment Zone" there was something else -- he was surrounded by a security contingent, a couple of vans, which had their side doors open, so when they passed by, we could see their VERY impressive show of arms -- over a dozen big burly guys with machine guns at the ready, fingers on triggers. I know the unelected freak is entitled to Secret Service protection to keep his sorry ass safe, but I have wondered if the doors were open to show his Mighty Imperial Power to those who opposed him.

Anyone who believes smirky delights in Democracy in Action is a stooge. I've always wondered if he suffered from "repression envy" as regards to Saddam Hussein.
