Senator Will Ask Rumsfeld to Testify to Panel on Iraq
Senator Will Ask Rumsfeld to Testify to Panel on Iraq
By CARL HULSE
Published: August 29, 2005

WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 - With lawmakers facing tough questions at home about the war in Iraq, Senator John W. Warner, the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, says he intends to summon Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld quickly for a hearing when Congress returns next week.

Mr. Warner, a Virginia Republican who is one of the most important Congressional voices on military policy, said mounting numbers of dead and wounded Americans, the contentious process of drafting an Iraqi constitution and the economic cost of the war were adding up to new anxiety in Congress.

"The level of concern is, I think, gradually rising," Mr. Warner said in an interview on Friday. "Our nation has given so much to the Iraqi people, and what are they giving us in return?"

Unlike some of his colleagues in both parties, Mr. Warner said he did not see parallels between the current situation and the Vietnam era. While he said he believed that most Republican lawmakers remained strongly behind administration policy, he indicated that continuing on the same course could steadily erode Congressional backing for the war.

"I don't see that the Congress is going to suddenly pull back like in the days of Vietnam," Mr. Warner said. "It is the desire of the Congress to continue to work with and support the administration. But there is always a tipping point."

1. "Our nation has given so much to the Iraqi people..."
over 10K dead Iraqi civilians

how many tons of bombs including nuclear ordnance

a ruined domestic economy such that the only game (employment)in town is serving in "security" like a duck in a shooting gallery

degradation and humiliation of those who were swept into abu gharib because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time and were innocent

looting of historical artifacts

disruption of basic services, i.e., electricity, water, sewage, garbage

complete loss of security for the civilian populace

not to mention ca 1800 US troops, truly a priceless sacrifice on our part, but what what do Iraqis care in light of the above?

10. Yeah ... and rifles and artillery are merely mineral delivery systems.
Imagine the generosity of all our "military assistance"! Imagine the solicitous folks who took their money for safekeeping. Any time I think someone from this criminal regime has reached the bottom of depravity and disdain, they surprise me and plunge deeper.

Talk about selfless compassion. I wasn't aware that "Liberation" was something we sold.

9. Uh-Oh that tore it-WARNER?!?! Big trouble
if Warner is really this upset (we'll see) this is big trouble for W&Co.Inc.

Warner is definitely of the moderate wing of the Repub party (HE prevented "Senator Oliver North") and an old DC- military hand (Sec.of NAvy). This could be the mods opening salvo of discontent and a call for Rummy to leave.

Again, we will see.

12. Are they actually going to have him under oath?
Or will they have their wink-wink gentlemen's agreement to let Rumsfeld lie his ass off and the committee will pretend not to notice . . . again.

14. Now Warner, don't start changing your mind now.....
Just go deaf to the fact that while we established "some" order there, we also stole all their oil, plundered their fields, rose an unfathomable level of hate towards the United States and lost all of our allies.

Yeah that's right, just ignore it. Donald Rumsfeld is a war criminal and you will either ask for his resignation and dispatch of his propaganda, or you will be asked for your own resignation....

Senator John Warner had best get behind the times.

15. Warner is feeling the heat IMO
I am angry that he said that "...given to Iraqi people" crap, the tide is turning!

He would NEVER have said that BEFORE CINDY, there is now a new day dawning.

He knows the writing is on the wall. He just has to pretend he is talking to his base.

Liz Taylor's biggest mistake was that criminal.

22. This posturing is no better than what the Professional wrestler
go through before a wrestling match to draw the excited suckers. They know what Rumsfeld is gonna say, we know what Rumsfeld is gonna say. What can Rumsfeld say that would be any difference? Warner is nothing but a goddamn whore for the crime cabal or the dumbest sonuvabitch in the United States of America.

The elected officials have let this country down.
