Dean Gets Standing Ovation from Arab-Americans
Edited on Sat Oct-18-03 07:09 PM by party_line
DEARBORN, Mich. (Reuters) - Democratic presidential hopeful Howard Dean received a standing ovation from an Arab-American audience on Saturday when he attacked leading conservatives and figures from the religious right.

"This flag belongs to every single American, including every single American in this room, and is the hope and aspiration for many other folks who are not yet citizens," he said.

The message was warmly received by the crowd of about 300 as Dean named Ashcroft, the U.S. Attorney General and a prominent spokesmen for America's conservative or religious right, along with Army Lt. Gen. William Boykin, the senior Pentagon intelligence official who has told Christian gatherings that Muslims worship an "idol."

His speech was repeatedly interrupted by applause as he condemned violations of civil liberties, racial profiling and abuse of authority under the USA Patriot Act, the anti-terror legislation championed by Ashcroft that passed after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Hundreds of Muslims and Arabs were detained in roundups after the attacks and Dean said the detentions and deportations of an untold number of immigrants based on secret evidence were unlawful and should be repealed.

5. Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie will use that footage in negative ads...
Unfair, inaccurate and mean as it is, I'm sure the ad will look something like this:

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Demagoguery Productions Inc.

30 sec.

Footage: Slow motion of a crowd of brown people, many wearing non-western garb, standing and applauding.

Music: eriee fingers scratching the chalkboard type of music.

Voice: "Liberal Howard Dean is at it again. It seems Governor Dean gave a speech in front of an Arab group that the FBI says has ties to Islamic terrorist groups (incriminating newspaper headlines from the Washington Times and the New York Post pop up). Now Howard Dean says he wants to lead America in the war on terrorism. America can't afford that risk."

Caption with smiling picture of Bush that says "President Bush: Moral Clarity for the New American Century.

end.

6. Don't forget to include the picure of Dean morphing into bin Laden
while the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence frolic in the background.

It doesn't matter who the Dem nominee turns out to be, Karl Rove will demonize him even if he was a 4-star general!

Stop worrying about what the GOP is going to do!

7. nonsense
We'll be sure to make commercials that show Bush praising Islam for being one of the "great religions" and "a religion of peace" followed by Dean talking to these folks.

Bring it.

9. I'm afraid you're right, but.....
we can't let evil intentions preclude us from doing the proper thing. Not that I have anything to do with the Dean campaign, but it shows that they have the courage of their convictions. Now if we can get convictions for the cabal in the white house, the House 'leadership', and Antonin Scalia (I'm ashamed to be an Italian-American with him as an example) we'll be on the road to recovering our country.

15. That's why I'm a Deanie, too
The man has guts! He has the courage to stand up for what he believes and he says what needs to be said. I like the fact that he doesn't back down just because his opinion may be "unpopular". I don't agree with him on every issue, but at least he explains his positions. He's open-minded enough to listen to opposing arguments and he's not afraid to modify his position if he thinks it's the right thing to do. (That must come from his medical background - if the new symptoms show that the original diagnosis is wrong, you don't ignore them.) Such a refreshing change from the "sit down, shut up and do it my way" pResident we have now!

14. More exerpts of the speech:
"A few weeks ago, Secretary Powell addressed the U.S.-Arab Economic Forum in Detroit. At that time, he expressed a very pessimistic message about the future of US relations with the Arab and Muslim world. I am here to day to offer a much more optimistic vision for addressing the problems that people throughout the region face.

"A little over a year ago, five of the contenders for the Democratic nomination supported the Iraq resolution giving the President blank check authority to go to war unilaterally and paving the way for the crisis that we now face...

"...In our relations with the Arab world, we can start that process by going beyond superficial statements declaring, 'we are not against Islam.'

19. tlcandie, you'll be glad to know
that Kucinich was well-received, too:

"Mr. Kucinich, who addressed the group from Washington, was cheered when he said he was the only candidate to vote against the antiterrorism act that gave the federal government broad new law enforcement powers. Many Arab-Americans say they believe that the law has been applied unfairly against them."

21. I especially like how Dean is hammering the other candidates for...
...having given Bush a blank check for war.

That uncritical support is why nothing Gephardt, Lieberman, or Kerry say about Iraq is to be taken seriously. Their time to have spoken up passed when they appeased Bush by rubber-stamping this war.

However, Dean's views on Iraq must evolve. The "I don't like it, but we're stuck" line is as useless as Bush's "it's great and we're stuck" line. Both lead to the same dead end.

Opposed and voting against the war and wants us out of Iraq. Plus if I/R is your big issue and you want a fair deal, then DK is your guy. Good job Doc Dean and Dennis Kucinich and others.

29. I back him already, thanks :-)
Thanks, John.

After 9/11, no US officeholder or official inspired me in the bleak early months of jingoism and the hateful embrace of the Orwellian more than Kucinich.

I recall one day reading his "Prayer for America" speech and feeling that oxygen was being returned, in gales, to a suffocating republic. I had thought all sense driven from our Congress (even the lamented Paul Wellstone was disappointing in those days, voting for the Patriot Act and all but mum). And suddenly there he was.

Dennis is a great man in my view, almost peerless in our politics. He is, I'd say, the heir apparent to the Wellstone legacy.

Whoever becomes president ought to appoint him to his administration.
