At Least Ten U.S. Airports Face Closure Due to Jet Fuel Shortages
August 31, 2005… Airlines and oil companies are working on plans to supply jet fuel to at least ten U.S. airports that could be shut down due to a lack of jet fuel caused by refinery and pipeline shutdowns from hurricane Katrina. The airports in most jeopardy for closure include Atlanta, Charlotte, Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers, Orlando, Tampa, Washington Dulles and West Palm Beach.

AAG has learned that ChevronTexaco and Shell had cargoes loaded prior to the shutdowns destined for Florida ports. However, with the Colonial and Plantation pipelines shutdown due to a lost of power it could be sometime for shipments to reach airports from Atlanta to Washington D.C.

With future supply uncertain, airlines are working on plans to allocate jet fuel at critically short airports.

6. If it is, I will find it hard to feel sympathetic for them.
I heard the governor of LA telling a reporter yesterday that they begged them to fly people out of NO on Sunday, and that they could have done so but refused because they didn't want to fly empty planes in. Once again, sacrificing people for the almighty dollar.

Cry me a fucking river for Delta airlines. :eyes: :nopity:

24. Why Dulles
The fuel is delivered by way of the Colonial pipeline, which, on its way from Louisiana to the northeastern US, runs through Fairfax County, Virginia, where Dulles is located.

Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 11:18 AM by mahatmakanejeeves
A graphic in the Washington Post business section on Thursday shows that are two pipelines going up through the southeast from New Orleans. The Plantation pipeline parallels the Colonial pipeline. According to the paper, it terminates near Washington National Airport. The graphic shows one branch leading to Dulles and another to Washington National.

9. Aircraft are responsible for 3.5% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide
Vital Signs Fact of the Week

Planes Utilize Most Fuel During Takeoff

The world's airlines use some 205 million tons of aviation fuel (kerosene) each year, producing greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, sulfur dioxide, and methane. Jet fuel is the second-largest expense to airlines after labor and can amount to 20 percent of companies' operating expenses.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report in 1999 found that aircraft are responsible for 3.5 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Flight is one of the fastest-growing emission sources, and no technological fixes are in sight.

14. The 747 gets about 1 mile per 5 gallons of fuel.
But if it is carrying 300 people, that is 300 passenger miles per 5 gallons of fuel, about 60 miles per gallon. It is better than 300 people driving alone in a SUV that gets 20 miles per gallon each.

The Aerorider is one of the newest players on the Dutch velomobile scene.  It is a very aesthetically pleasing design made mostly out of fiberglass.

The Aerorider is a bit heavier than many of its competitors but it does come complete with an electric drive motor.  If you were already considering an electric-assist velomobile, this one may even be considered a bargain.  Steering is accomplished with sidesticks and a large portion of the greenhouse tilts forward to allow entry.

Price Range – Approximately 5500€

That the emissions occuring at altitude cause the CO2 to be in a better place to trap IR waves and therefore the effect is more prenounced.

back in the 90's. The oil companies inventory very little fuel at this point. We are now going to suffer from the result of their greed and short sightedness.

26. In one sense, we all live this close
to the edge. The thing that makes all of it happen is electricity...and when that goes, all of it goes...our lives as we know it.

Fragile.

And without it, we become...savages?...survivors?...deceased?

We are watching a very powerful reminder.

22. remember Y2K ? well, it finally happened
We survived that BS about a man made disaster caused by lazy programming of 2 digits instead of 4 digits. Now, we messed with a real Mother - Mother Nature - and a Y2K-like event finally hit the USA. Remember the tsunami? Well, things are not looking real good here on Earth. Ladies and Gentlemen, we are dire need of some real leaders.

45. It wasn't lazy programming
At the time those programs were written, drive space cost bigtime hard dollars and systems were expected to last five years.

I started whining and bitching about Y2K in 1991 and we were good to go in plenty of time.

37. OOOhh NOOOhh, not West Palm Beach
I know this should be the least of anyone's worries at this point, but my niece is supposed to be getting married on the beach in West Palm this weekend and they are flying down from Vermont and other point in the NE. I can't go for money/work issues, but the rest of the family is supposed to be leaving today and tomorrow. I just hope that all of their plans aren't upset. Put into perspective things could be much worse for them, but she is such a good girl, I hate to see anything bad ever happen to her.

Hopefully, everyone will get there and then will have to stay on the beach! Maybe they will just go up to the gulf region and work on disaster relief instead. There, I feel better now.
