Bush compares, contrasts Katrina and Nine-Eleven

WHITE HOUSE President Bush says while Nine-Eleven was a man-made attack and Hurricane Katrina natural, their aftermath is "just as serious."

Bush tells A-B-C "New Orleans is more devastated than New York was." But, he promises the city will rise again.

He says seeing the destruction from Air Force One was emotional. Bush plans to tour devastated areas tomorrow.

but the lacking in protection and preparation are manmade.

16. no, not no planning .
no funding

"It appears that the money has been moved in the president’s budget to handle homeland security and the war in Iraq, and I suppose that’s the price we pay. Nobody locally is happy that the levees can’t be finished, and we are doing everything we can to make the case that this is a security issue for us."??-- Walter Maestri, emergency management chief for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana; New Orleans Times-Picayune, June 8, 2004.

No, George. The situation in NO is much worse. No enemy attack, but probably thousands more casualties, much worse environmental degredation, much worse property damage.

11. "...the destruction from Air Force One was emotional"
Edited on Thu Sep-01-05 10:47 AM by marbuc
A tear came to his eye as he was reminded of his last fishin' trip in the bayou. "Them redfish were good eatin'" he recalls fondly. When reminded of the flooding, Bush's reminiscence turns to confusion "There are people down there? Why didn't they just swim away?"

12. 9/11, 9/11, 9/11, 9/11
I wondered how long it would take the Dumbass to link them together somehow, because he relies on the Pavlovian response he gets from his base when they hear "9/11". All he has to do is drop that one reference into a sentence and the brain-dead ones are reassured that their Preznit is "keeping them safe", so they tune out and go back to watching wrestling.

I'm sure Bill Clinton's blowjob is what really caused Katrina. Someone will make the connection soon enough.

It happened, it was an outrage, and a tragedy.

It was also 4 years ago.

Unless you lost a relative on 9-11, or you were injured at Ground Zero, it's time to get the hell over it and move on!!!!!

9-11 is not the only tragedy to ever befall this nation, nor will it be the last!

31. Please spare me your get over it shit
I didn't lose any family members but I live and work in NY and it is real to us every single day. All we have to do is look downtown and see what is not there to be seen. We are still a target, we lost a real part of our city. To New Yorkers the 9-11 attacks are personal. It was OUR city, OUR home that was hurt, that is hurt. And even if we all carry on every day and continue living and have fun, it is all still real and just below the surface for New Yorkers. So don't sit there from your position of safety and tell us you're sick of hearing about 9-11.

I don't like 9-11 used as a rallying cry for Bush's fuck up in Iraq either. I don't like 9-11 used as justification for restriction of our civil and human rights or demonization of people either.

But I will never ever get over it. No one should.

And as to comparing it to Katrina? Well, with respect to this administrations utter unpreparedness and utter incompetence and utter inability to plan and prevent and properly handle-there are great similarities.

As to this administrations disregard for the environment, sell out to corporate interests, and diversion of funds from cities to the war, yeah, they screwed this up and they screwed up pre 9-11 intelligence

But I think the similarities end there and comparing the two catastrophes does nothing to help the people who need help now or honor those who have perished as a result of these two disasters.

23. In both cases, we are watching americans die on television
Whatever the death toll is, this is far worse than 9-11 in the sense that survivors of 9-11 still had their homes and families waiting for them. I suspect the death toll is going to be around the same or higher, but it won't be easy to determine for a long time.

26. Honestly, are we really surprised by this???
I said this on Sunday, that he would use 9/11 and I got hell for it. Now, I hate to be the cat that caught the mouse, but there is nothing this scumbag* won't resurrect to boost his plummeting poll numbers. All he has is 9/11, which happened on his watch, to confuse the public into thinking he* is a capable leader.

Face it folks, he's* a scumbag. Any hope that any of you hold out that he has some shred of decency in him*, I think, this latest 9/11 mention by him* dispels that myth.

The guy is an utter and complete failure in epic proportions. We are now seeing him (and finally the rest of the nation) as the uncaring, selfish, manipulating, condescending, fuck that he* really is.

colossal failure*.

29. And while he is comparing it to 9/11
Some of the media newscasts I've seen have compared it (the looting in particular) to Baghdad after the US invasion (I beleive CNN was one).

Interesting dichotomy. When I heard that on the news I was waiting to see Rumsfeld come on and say, "Well, Freedom is messy". Although were clamping down on the looters here apparantly.

Strangely, when the comparison was made to Bahgdad, I was thinking the most logical comparison would be to the Tsunami in December. While I'm sure someone has made that comparison in some way, I haven't heard it in the MSM. Out of sight out of mind I guess.

Guess Who Castrated FEMA?

Frankly, this is not the most difficult question ever posed. The usual suspects are, of course, in the frame. Here is a hint: it was the same group that just slashed $71.2 million from the New Orleans District budget which was largely for urban flood control. MORE >

Chalk up the city of New Orleans as a cost of Bush's Iraq war.

There were not enough helicopters to repair the breeched levees and rescue people trapped by rising water. Nor are there enough Louisiana National Guards available to help with rescue efforts and to patrol against looting. MORE >

56. he might as well contrast it to 7-eleven (the store)
He would have just as much luck deflecting the blame with that approach

60. I Won't Knock Dubya For This One
I have been thinking of the ways this is like 9-11 for days.

The missed opportunities, failures to protect Americans.

The way my confidence in the strength of this country is shaken.

The heartbreaking loss of life, and less significant, but still there, the destruction of something great

66. Weather can be manipulated just as easily as planes? Weather experts?
What is the latest and most up to date information on the manipulation of environmental variables and weather related changes and events?

This is an issue of high importance that needs immediate attention.

Why the new Ads illustrating what NYC would look like if submerged in water, and the public statements that these Ads predated "Katrina?"

Just a coincidence, of course!

"<...> drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee WAS dry <...>"

Things happen in 3's?

Over calculated and predictable?

Maybe I'm crazy?

71. Does that mean there's a War on Nature now?
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 10:18 PM by neuvocat
I mean, an official one?

"Ah told you that all these trees had to be cut down because of all that oxygen they produce. If there wasn't all that oxygen, then there wouldn't have been any hurricanes. If there weren't any hurricanes then america would be safer, ah tells ya!"
