AP: NO Evacuation May Have Come Too Late for Many
Posted 9/3/2005 10:28 PM

New Orleans evacuation may have come too late for many

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The last bedraggled refugees were rescued from the Superdome on Saturday and the convention center was all but cleared, leaving the heart of New Orleans to the dead and dying, the elderly and frail stranded too many days without food, water or medical care.

No one knows how many were killed by Hurricane Katrina's floods and how many more succumbed waiting to be rescued. But the bodies are everywhere: hidden in attics, floating among the ruined city, crumpled on wheelchairs, abandoned on highways.

The last refugees at the Superdome and the convention center climbed aboard buses Saturday bound for shelters, but the dying goes on.

9. Now the cover up begins.......
Edited on Sun Sep-04-05 09:10 AM by niceypoo
I am sure the true number of dead will be withheld for "reasons of national security". All investigations into the debacle will be quashed. A Bush appointed "commission" will eventually hold lamo hearings on the matter. Nothing to see here folks.......move along...

10. Other reasons we'll hear are... "to protect the privacy of the families"
... and "out of respect for the deceased".

16. Yep, and no foreign aid efforts other than cash. Don't want anyone
stumbling across the truth.

3. This gets the Obvious Post award of today.
glad they are still covering it. No headlines: "Superdome evacuated-all praise President Bush!" "He did it!"

5. I don't think this is at all obvious to everyone....
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 11:00 PM by DeepModem Mom
It's obvious to us here, but I've been eavesdropping on conversations since yesterday, and many if not most people I've heard seem to think all's well now that the military have arrived, some are being evacuated, and food and water are being distributed. I think a lot of people need to be told by the press that many have died, and are still dying, because the response to this crisis was too slow.

7. I've heard some of the same.

I will continue to argue what really happened with every element at my disposal. I will NEVER forget this, and my near and dear ones will bear the brunt of my knowledge. Tough sh!t for them I guess.

If the rest of America wants to forget and move on, we deserve what we get in the end. IMHO, the people responsible for this abrogation of their duties under the Constitution should be held accountable.

8. There are still over a thousand 911 calls each day ...
... from people trapped in attics in the flooded parts of N.O. They have cell phones, and they call once or twice a day. Some of them have been in the dark, and even standing in water, for nearly a week now without food or water. And in New Orleans, there were lots of poor people who didn't have cell phones. Others had cell phones, but didn't think to take them while they were struggling for their lives.

You bet there are people who died while waiting for help. Lots of dead grannies and babies.

Imagine, for a moment, your own grandmother or grandfather or a favorite elderly aunt or uncle, in the dark, soaking wet, in 100F heat, without food or water or their meds, not knowing when or if they would be found.

14. leaving the heart of New Orleans to the dead and dying,
They are not evacuating the dying? Who is making the big decision, I wonder? "Well, this one is sick, will probably die, so may as well leave them behind."
